I removed 1 quitter last night for a total of 16/24 chicken eggs & 30/30 coturnix eggs going into lockdown 🤞

It’s also day 1 for 32 more coturnix eggs in my new Borotto Lumia 16 😁😁😁

My kids are really pushing for some Tractor Supply bantams. Ours gets a new delivery of chicks on Wednesday morning. They never know what’s coming in a shipment. So we’ll probably pop over anyways. Just to take a look. 😉
The bantam bin is sooo hard to resist! All the chicks are cute, but the bantams are even cuter!

I decided to lockdown early, day 17, due to my toddler catching a stomach bug. Hoping it’s just her (she’s already on the mend). I don’t want to the run the risk it’s contagious and going to get passed around the family. The incubator was prepped today to make sure it gets done.

I like to wedge paper towels around the base, unplug and pull the turner, add shelf liner, and mark air cells. Then position eggs to have the best chance of seeing their pips. The paper towels are for easy cleanup.

17 out of 36 made it to lockdown. Not great numbers but its worked out ok. This was always intended to be the start of a flock. I have chicks arriving tonight or tomorrow morning. Then 2 dozen eggs being shipped in next week. With one or two extras snuck in from Tractor Supply that’ll be it for the year. Ideally after growing out and culling I’ll have 12-15 keeper hens and 2-3 roosters.

Can you explain the paper towels? Thanks!

It’s to do less deep cleaning after the hatch. It keeps down the chick fluff, egg pieces, poop, other hatching goop from falling in this part of the base. The first time I used it I had to use q-tips and toothpicks to get everything out.

Day 10 for me. Candled and removed 3 quitters. 15 eggs still in the incubator: 3 CCL, 2 EE, 3 OE, 2 Orpington, and 5 EE mixes. Started with 27, so I felt like I was doing something wrong, but since only 4 quitters I have to remember that 8 clears has nothing to do with me! Fingers crossed for the last 15…
