I plan on making a more detailed thread when I really start the garage to coop revamp but any thoughts on using WW overlapping?

I know HW cloth is best but tater is it expensive! I can get 100’ of 48” WW with 2”x4”openings for $45 cheaper then buying HW cloth. My thought was overlap the WW to get 1”x2” openings. Is that enough or should I suck it up and spend the $$$$?

Anyone know where to get fencing cheap in bulk? LOL

If you are going to shut them up at night, the Welded wire should be fine. I have my mobile coops inside an unelectrified poultry net and I haven't lost any birds because we shut them up at night.

suck it up for coops
weasels and mink can get through anything larger than 1/2"
ww fine for runs

That should work just fine. If you have local hardware stores or small feed stores go in and talk to them about wire "it helps if you can hook an older man to talk to" and that will get you the best deal.:)

I didn't read well. Yes, your coop has to be secure. 2"x 4" welded wire won't cut it. I had a raccoon pull two cockerels right through 2"x 4" welded wire. It wasn't overlaped, but if the wire isn't welded and you have 1"x2" gaps, The coon could bend the wire to make the hole big enough to pull out a bird.

Because of my bizarre work schedule I wanted to make a permanent run that I wouldn’t be worried about leaving them in when I go to work. I always do a bed check and shut them in at night but sometimes I’m home before 9 other times after 10:30. I leave at 4 so unless there are feet of snow they are outside when I leave.

No idea what type of predators I may have either. With roosters my biggest concern is the possibility of the human kind.

I am taking the 2 carport frames and everything else I currently use.

I have this PVC fencing currently and haven’t had any breaches. I’d like to put at least 1 of the frames on wheels and use this fencing and the netting to make a movable run.

Spitballing is all.... always thinking of the chickens and what I can do for them.

I would use that PVC fencing over the top of a WW run to keep the birds in and have an automatic door that shuts the birds securely in their coop after dark. The WW will do well enough for most daytime predators.

Any birds that don't get in the coop before dark is, in my opinion, too stupid to live.

I think runs and coops depend highly on your location and how predator heavy it is. Mine don't get locked into a secure building every night. I only have chicken wire on my runs, and each breed has a "house" they sleep in, with an open pop door (except for the seramas, who sleep up on perches inside their runs) But my yard is also picket fenced, with chicken wire on most of that fence, plus 2 rows of electric wire on that. I've had my share of losses. Mostly racoons that got several of my ducks a few months ago, but I've never had one invade a run or coop. Hawks are my worse predator. :(

My concerns with an automatic door is if it shuts to early and someone misses getting inside. Or worse shutting something in with them. I did that w/o an automatic door. Luckily I checked the coop after shutting the pop door only to find little bandit eyes looking back at me. My sleeping chickens oblivious.

I'd love to do a coop door that I could check on everyone via camera then shut remotely with my smart phone. That's in the future plans I hope.
