Official Squatch Watchers

I vote for a net on any that are roosted to high to reach.

Long handled fishing net should help.

I don't recommend trying to hang onto a flapping bird while on a ladder. That could be rather dangerous.

Definitely have a helper.

I would be trying to gather them up too. No need to have injured hens.

So beloved squatchers, serious question (and I know you're gonna laugh but....)
How DO you catch a feral chicken??? More specifically, how do you catch 14 feral chickens?

I would look for where they are roosting and try a night grab.

Definitely night time grab... and I have heard of HUGE success with pool nets.. or butterfly nets..... someone also mentioned a T pole... raising it up, and putting in under the breast of the chicken, where they would step on to it, like a perch.

Rae, take MD in the bathroom for a steam treatment, it will help clear the junk out that is causing him to cough. The cough will be more productive. Do it about 15 mins after he wakes up in the morning, same thing after his main nap, and again about 45 mins before bed at night. 15 mins in the steam should be sufficient, and that gived 30 mins for everything to settle back to normal so it doesn't get congested as son add he lays down. The moisture thins the mucous and loosens it, sio you want the extra moisture to dry out before putting him down for the night, unless you have a humidifier running near his bed while he sleeps.

We have a nebulizer for our family. You can buy specialty masks made specifically for MDs small(er) face as well. I know, each time we've had to take the PIC in for some sort of respiratory problem, we've told the Dr/nurse that we have a nebulizer, and they readily gave us the meds and saline solution we need to help. It's amazing how much faster the PIC (and all fo us) feel better when using a nebulizer.

So HI errrrrbody!!!! Been napping trying to nap off and on. Severe sinus pressure in my temples, CHIRPCHIRPCHIRP from the bator, and a wiggly PIC has made sleep impossible.

Still sitting at 2 hatchlings. At least 5 more eggs have pipped.

I use a short handle landing net, my big net has a long handle and is too awkward in the 8' wide coop and pens i run them into.. the problem I had was they would climb up the wire and that is hard to get a net over them before they reach the top.. wings a beating

Ok, I can see how that could be a problem. My main run is 8ft by 8ft with a pitched roof. I think my poultry net has either a 3 or 4 foot handle? I will talk to hubby. We have so many odds and ends lying around that if I told him what I needed he might make me a sort of hook thing if I can't buy one.

:goodpost: Hubby said he would try to help. And he is much taller than I am.

This stuff is gold guys! Thank you for all the ideas!

Here's a vid on how to make the hook. The T Handle idea sounds interesting. Supposedly, they will instinctively step up on it as they are nearly comatose after dark. Then you just lower them down to the second person who picks them up off the perch. To much light is also not good. Working a net in tree limbs and a tight run is no fun at all.

Smuv, hope you feel better soon! Hot compresses and vicks vaporub....

LOVE THE LEGWIRE!!

Sure beats running around stressing everyone out!
It is great that he actually shows how to shape it AND use it.

Great for chickens. Do not use for ducks though. It injures their legs if held by them. They cannot be safely carried by the legs either. Putting that out there in case folks don't know that.

Great idea RJ. :thumbsup

Smuv, do you have peppermint oil? Chamomile, lavender tea? local Raw honey? rosemary oil? citrus oil of a fruit you like? The essential oils need to be food grade. You really only need the peppermint, but rosemary is good for respiratory issues (internally... Oregano is too) and the citrus is really there just to cut the rosemary with something you like. DW does orange, I do grapefruit.

Put a table spoon or two (what ever you like) of honey in the bottom of a medium large coffee cup (civilian standard not military standard), add 10-12 drops of peppermint, 4-6 drops of rosemary and a couple drops of citrus. Fill with water and microwave for two minutes. Stir it up and add the tea bag. Cup your hands over your nose and the cup and inhale through your nose while the tea steeps. If it starts to burn give it a rest. NO BURNING! The aroma therapy will loosen up your sinuses, be prepared for runny eyes too. Sorry its a real side effect. Then drink the tea. Continue to sniff as you drink. This blend also helps DW when she has tummy issues (I have no idea why, another side effect).
