Official Squatch Watchers

@Suzi18 good idea getting the Humane Society involved. I’d call them back in a few days to see if they investigated. If you keep on them hopefully they’ll move fast.
So sad a place that’s supposed to be there for help with animal care would treat one so poorly.
I know right?,?, How can a place that sells chicks and poultry supplies be so clueless. I will say that the tubs of chicks looked well cared for

Good morning Squatchers. I've been scarce lately but I really need some help from my peeps.i went to Rural King in Norwalk OH yesterday and left horrified and in tears. They had a full grown OEGB in a small rabbit hutch...alone....with. a sign that read " Hi, I'm Buster the new store Mascot. I'm an OEGB. Please don't feed me popcorn cuz it makes me sick". This poor pitiful rooster was on a perch. His tail down, his head tucked down into his neck, eyes closed. To say he looked sad and pitiful is an understatement. I found a store employee and asked her if they planned on keeping him in there and she said " yes...he's our new store mascot". She said this with a big smile as if it was good news. She also said " We were thinking about getting him a hen" (Oh great...that will help...then you can have 2 penned up depressed chickens) I explained to her that chickens are called FLOCK animals for a reason. Told her he looked very depressed and that keeping him in there alone was cruel. I asked if I could buy him and was told again...."Oh no...of course not... hes our new store mascot and hes not for sale". I offered her $50 and she said no. I left my cart and told her I would never shop there again. I called Smuv on my way home and told her about it. Smuv being who she is....told me to go back and steal him. Lol. Clearly not an ooption.I called the store and spoke to a manager who obviously doesn't have a clue about raising chickens. I even called the Huron County Humane Society and made a formal complaint. They were very helpful and wrote up a report and said they would check into it. Hopefully it won't be too late for that sad depressed little guy.it still just makes me sick to my stomach. So what I'm hoping is that each and every one of you will call this store and voice your concern. Maybe if enough people call and complain they will do the right thing. I'm not sure about the rules on BYC about posting phone numbers so I will just tell you....Its Rural King on Rt 20 in Norwalk OH.

Thanks for letting me vent.

My local RK store has a porcelain d'uccle cockerel. He's very pretty, been there for several months. I always stop and talk to him. I think they take pretty good care of him, even though he's alone.

This rooster never once opened his eyes the whole time I stood there talking to him and he definitely di not look happy.

Suzi, it would be great if the people you talk to at the paper and news stations are good chicken owners.

I know what they are thinking in the store, they read somewhere that chickens only need x amount of space per bird, but they don't realize that it's hen house space, and that it's assumed that they will be outside in a run or free range during the daylight hours. Ideally, they will get a decent sized coop or two from their own supplier, and put one outside and the other inside, and let him have more room, some outside time in decent weather and a couple hens. They can figure out the logistics of rolled turf for both just by setting up two raised beds for the coops to sit on. Yes, it would be more tham they would want to spend, but it's the minimum that they need to do.

Good evening squatchers!

Hatch update: One more fully hatched and healthy new chick and one other that died after it externally pipped. It was malpositioned :hit
One egg remains but I think it is DIS. I will leave it for now though just in case I am wrong.

So grand total is 5 beautiful little fluffy butts. 3 boys and two girls :love I know 5 babies out of 9 developed eggs is not a very good hatch rate. But I never really needed 10 chicks. I bought 10 eggs cause I knew the hatch rate could be bad and I really wanted to get at least one pullet chick. And I got two! :woot I am planning to keep both pullet chicks and one cockerel chick. And I already found a buyer for the other two males! Double :woot

How are everyone else’s flocks doing? @21hens-incharge I loved the autocorrect! Mean Broodies should all be renamed bloodies :gig @Redhead Rae any luck fixing the Franken Bator? @pitbullmomma I believe you promised us Pippin pics? :pop @Smuvers Farm I bet you will be a hit at the farmers market!

Love you all!!!

@CSAchook I did, indeed Had the babies outside for half the day today, it's been beautiful out. Pics to come later. :)

I'm hoping they just put him up for sale. I'm sure someone would snatch him up quickly. I can't be the only one that is aggravated at the conditions that rooster is living in. I would imagine other customers feel like I do. (I would hope so anyway)

Got an incubator question for everyone... What type of water and what do you put in it to maintain your humidity in the bator? I've always used filtered water with Brinsea disinfectant, but they are out of stock and I want to set eggs on the 5/5...
