Addendum:

I am not gonna lie. I caught a freshly-laid Fergus (beautiful white dove-like Serama) egg in my hand. As I watched the bloom dry, I said "Tater it," and threw it in the bator. It was like some crazy, possessed chicken person took over my body and did it.

I figure, if any of those Cemanis hatch, if there is only one, it will need a sibling. And Seramas are tiny, and will not take up much space. Plus, I am rehoming Pippins (my frizzled BC) because she is EVIL. As in, she hates me and tries to peck me to death every time I get near her (no lie, her eyes become full of hatred). She actually pecked me in the upper eyelid once and drew blood.

So my chicken math is thus:

At my max, I had 17 chickens (mostly bantams. Five standard, but ACs are like bantams, as they are pretty small).

Now I have 15 chickens. Only 4 standard, and my biggest, nasty-assed bantam is going away.

So: 14 chickens I will have. This mean s I can have 3 more (hatch!) and then I am where I started. Actually, if one Serama hatches, I will be from before, because that is a smaller replacement chicken.

At least, this is how I will explain it to my husband, who always says "NO MORE CHICKENS!!!" It's half-assed, however, when he says it now, because he knows it is part of my therapy.

I have to go to TSC now and buy chicken food (look at the baby chicks. I'm not gonna buy any, I swear).

Damn it, my minute was up a looooong time ago, lol! See ya later.....

Just popping in for a second (this isn't scheduled computer time, but I figure if it's under a minute, it doesn't count)

Day 5 of the Great Eggsperiment!!!

There are FOUR spider babies now. Four! :wee

I pulled out my calendar and did some calculating. Those eggs are old, and cold! It's amazing....

Lafayette got sick around August 3rd. So those eggs can be up to 6 weeks old, and in the fridge for that long.

Based on the size, they are either Cemani--not Brahma--from the big coop.

Or, they are Cemani X Silkie.

The only other possibility is that they are Silkie eggs fertilized by Negan (Serama). Because the Silkie and Cemani eggs are almost impossible to tell apart. Sperm is stored in a gland inside the hens oviduct

This is all very eggciting, no matter what (if any) of them hatch!
The hens will be fertile for up to 30 days after the rooster is gone. Two weeks or so is very fertile and then the percentages go down from there.

Don't you come home with a bunch of meatbirds woman!:caf

Mine still refuse to roost. All huddled together under the nest boxes. At least they aren't getting pooped on.
Same. They *want* to roost w/ everyone else, but my girls are mean and won't let them up there. I'm hoping once I get rid of the boys they'll be more accepting to the to girls. That lavender is getting HUGE and won't be able to fit up there much longer.

Slid on my shoe to go work in the Shop and felt a poke. Took off my shoe but no splinter as i expected. BUT, my shoe is buzzing angrily!
Yeah i got stung by this insect that looks like a combo wasp and bee! Took a Benadryl, iced it for an hour while i worked. All swollen. So fun!
 I hope it was a one off & you don't have a nest of them somewhere.

Good morning all and Rj:frow
I’m well stocked I think.
Only thing I’m regretting is that we are NOT boarded up.

It doesn’t matter now because plywood is in short supply, but I’ve been strongly divided on this with DH since this storm was confirmed as a problem for us.
His work has been grueling the past week -I get that.
And he’ll have to hit the ground running as soon as the storm passes because of his field.
I totally get that he felt that he couldn’t/didn’t want to do it but I wanted to hire someone to come do it fast and do it right. When I gave DH a ballpark figure his eyes bugged out just like our emoji here.
What can I say. He’s cheap.
I'm so worried for you and @Chickassan and everyone else near the coast. Stay safe, and remember, sleep in street clothes & keep your shoes by the bed, just in case.

I understand! I finally cut myself off for the season 3 weeks ago. My last 2 babies for the year are hatching today!

@apryl29 Don't worry about me i'll be just fine. I'm not even worried about me. Just a bunch of rain and some semi-gnarly wind. @staceyj , now that lady needs all the worrying she's right up it's nose.
Got the coop shoveled out, taking a break before I put more hay down. Trying to make it as comfy as possible in case any of mine want to be smart and stay in there. My lord though, so much poop! Didn't look like much but it was! :)
