Lost my first chicken to a hawk.
Broody . Her chicks had been jumping through the e net and running around the old horse pasture. I hadn't seen her out before, but I found her 20ft outside the fence. Judging by the feathers and blood It looks like she was caught up against the fence and moved.
I heard the turkeys and then her broody sister give alarm. I went to look and a red tail flew up.... 4 Stupid Roosters and nothing from them.
She was about 200ft from the rest of the flocks. Down a brush covered hill, in a mowed area.
I guess she got out to be with her chicks...chicks are with the sister

O Cr*p! That is so sad -- and roosters not doing anything!
 
Yes I remember Grandma, little Homie will probably eat as well as the other ones if she ever stops spinning at the bowl.
I try to kind of scoot her over she ends up trampling heads.

Chicky.....Do you remember the chicken we called Grandma? She had that too. Straight beak but underbite and a bit of a hook to the tip. She ate well even with dry crumbles.

Good afternoon folks!

Last night was rough. After going down easy, I got woken up at 12:30 to feed Thing 2. I was so discombobulated that I thought it was 3 and DH was getting up to leave. Nope. Thing 2 woke him as well and he just needed to use the bathroom. Then Thing 1 came in at 3 and 4 to be covered up. He woke again at 4:45 to ask to use the potty. Thing 2 woke at 5 wanting to nurse again and my alarm went off at 6:45 because I had to start work early. Bleh. Fortunately my mom came over an watched movies with the boys this morning while DH was away. She has conjunctivitis and isn't feeling well but she was able to monitor the boys while keeping them out of my hair. DH is back and we got our azure order. They have the BEST cantalope! It is so sweet and is perfect with a dash of salt. :drool Can you tell I already had a bowl? LOL

At one point I had 42 chickens so I have 2 for scratch, 1 for oyster shell, and six for the pellets. I stack them in my sewing room so I cannot say if mice would chew on the buckets.

Lots of places to buy them. I got mine at home depot.

We kept a bunch of food in gamaseal buckets in the old farm house. We had a mouse infestation. Only mouse signs on the buckets were droppings on the tops. :sick

I hate buying shoes without trying them on (unless I KNOW the brand really well) my feet are so knobbly and bony that I get rub burns in the oddest places.

The plan......wooden frames holding double layer chicken wire. Each side panel and the lid will be removable for tending and the chicken wire will still let bees in.

WILL IT WORK? No telling til I try. In years past even the crappy bird netting as helped but was a real PITA to deal with.

1 inch chicken wire worked for us when we had a strawberry bed in a squirrel infested area.

I am going to try my best. We are super smoky still here. We have a lot of ash falling from all the fires. It is hard to breathe outside. I worry about the birds but certainly cannot bring them into the house.

@Molpet , so sorry about your hen. I lost my favorite silkie to a hawk this year.
