The Quack Shack

Working towards that spring breed consolidation plan. No fair outbidding me by the way! I've been very patient with this auction, watching it for 6 days now... ;)

The 55f cost $20 for cocks and $30 for pullets, at a day old. The auction is $30 including shipping. If I get 2 chicks from it, it's a decent price. (Lol, and about the only way i can afford them)

Messing around in the chicken genetic calculator, it looks like crossing Ollie the Orloff over the Light Brahma girls would give sex linked chicks.

In general, I've postponed the meat bird plans because I was not able to get the breeds I want until at least this spring. However, I found out Orloffs where breed for meat, not eggs. If things work out with Ollie, I already have some decent pullets to cross with him. It's not a main focus, but with his size and age he could be the "missing link" in my previous plans.

@rjohns39 I read a review that said the meat tasted great but it was a hard fleshed bird. What would hard fleshed mean?

I suspect they are talking about toughness. The older the bird when harvested the tougher they'll be. So it's a trade off for flavor, toughness or tenderness and size.
