Good Golly!

Okay folks. I've got a plan. I've got most of the details worked out for the pin in the back yard. The general dimensions are going to be 50' x 12', and split in to 3 coop/run areas. Two living areas will be 20' and for chicken breeding, and the last 10' living area will be for quail.

Area #1 wil be for the Crèvecoeur and 2-3 NN ladies (in search for true Turkens btw). This is going to be the general meat bird pin. I don't really plan on eating the Creves, but the CR x NN hybrids. I don't know why, but I feel like raising an endangered species just to slaughter it seems counter productive, hybrids though can be made just for that purpose. So the Crevs are for preservation and crosses, while the NN (find me Turkens! Pls!) will hopefully help provide hybrid vigor, and a larger breast. Plus the NN feature makes it easier for them to handle the heat here.

Area #2 will be for the egg laying projects. The rooster will hopefully be Sully, if not I've already reached out to a few people to try and find Blue Birchen Marans eggs, a splash Birchen roo would be ideal. The hens are planned to be 2-3 each of Arucana, Legbar, EE, OE for OE production. Also the 3 Golden Cuckoo Marans ladies for the chocolate egg sex links.

Area #3 will just be a general quail area. That's the bird I wanted to do from the very start, and now that I have it, they bore the snot out of me. I'm pretty sure that's just because they are in a cage, small, easy to forget, and totaly boring. However, watching a few videos of them in runs reminds me they are just boring because they're being cage raised. It's not natural, not that pins are but that's a seperate arguement. I'd love to have enough quail to actually enjoy them and their eggs. I get so few eggs now that I've not even tried one, just feed them to the dogs. @Pyxis tirned me on to Myshire quail and their beautiful colors, so I'm looking to order 25 hatching eggs, thankfully they're much cheaper than chicken eggs.

As of right now I'm looking at keeping Simba (newer Marans fella) for the new free range flock lead. He's naturally taking it anyways, and doing an okay job at it. He and I might have issues though as he's had a few hard stare downs with me. As long as he's not human aggressive though, he doesn't have to like me, he just needs to respect me and be a good rooster. I've been walking through him everytime we cross paths, and he always gets out of my way. Hopefully he's just sizing me up for my order in the flock. I'll give him all the space here needs, but if he turns aggressive he's gone. He's got some big shoes to fill if he's going to replace Sully, my beloved Yard King.

My guy is one of the colors that would come in German Pastel collection :) But those Schofield Silvers are really pretty. If I was buying more, that's the collection I would get, I think. I also really like the Snowie color too.
The Snowy is very pretty. I do like the white and gray scale of those types, but the deep browns in the Rosetta are catching my eye too. To many pretty choices. :th
