You bring up a good point, haven’t really thought about it like that, but that does sound like possibly why they do. I just kinda figured out domestic ones did so much because we tend to feed them so well. I noticed my brothers cat would slap and hiss at our dogs if they went near her food. But our ducks would literally just walk up and start eating her food right in her face and she wouldn’t do anything.

I hope you get some from hatching, I’m planning on trying to hatch some ourselves next year. We have really been wanting to grab us some Muscovy just to hopefully let them hatch eggs for us. They are so dang expensive compared to the others it is kinda crazy. Can order hens of other breeds for the price of just straight run of them. We have been debating how many to even get so we can get atleast 3 female Muscovy, and keep one male. Everything I’ve read about them sounds like they are very beneficial to have around, these guys do keep quite a bit of the insects down, but sounds like them Muscovy would probably put a real dent in them around.
When we moved to WV in 2018, ticks were crawling all over me whenever i even looked at the grass. Then we got ducks and i haven't seen a tick until this year. But this year it was insane, neighbors told me their cats 'n dogs had ten or more tick-bites per day !
Now with 47 ducks around i could roll through the grass… (and would be full of duck-poop)

I think they do lol
You know in the wild ducklings have to grow up pretty fast to stay alive with all the predators that like to eat them. Probably the same for our domestics too.
Except if you have a smart momma, who found a place with a pond without large fish and a floating island and a guy who welcomes momma ducks and her babies and feeds them with cracked corn and cat-food… And a flock of domestic ducks around who are welcoming too.

We had that topic of a birb snatching more than can be swallowed and being chased by the rest of the flock. Yesterday the Ducknagers found a small potato in the potato patch…
You have some very beautiful ducks! Toward the end when your black Swedish? Has it and that blue Swedish? Comes up she tells the other nope mine, only to have the white one take it lol

You still have grass? Most of my yard is mud and muck!
During the summer, the plantago covers the area between the house and the duck house, so it isn't too bad. During the Winter however… :sick - Mixture of mud and poop.
But there's something that can be done: Wood-Chips! This Winter season i have to bury the water- and electric line for the duck house and after that is done i will cover the whole are with wood-chips. I still have three truck-loads of chips from when they cut the power-lines free. First this will prevent a marshland to build and second i can level the uneven ground. Level as in »set up your over-ground pool on a level surface.«!

I always wanted to have a very mixed flock. All these different breed behave, even quack different! On hotb summer days, when everybody's resting it is just fun to watch that patchwork duck carpet with some grass in between.
