Ok. I had two eggs in the bator. They both hatched but one is not going to make it. So single duckling is screaming its head off. I start calling around and TSC got in some ducklings an hour ago. I run over to get the baby some companians. They have Anconas! So I grab two and head home. The brooder is empty. This duckling hatched yesterday. Where did it go? Did my cats eat it? No somehow it got out and I found it swimming in the dog bowl. One day old.
You can expect great things from this one. A little Duckstein…

Hey everybody - do you put leg bands on your ducks?

If so, what kinds are there, are there some that are safe, durable and easy to install for clumsy people?

Thank you!
First mail-order ducklings i used colored zip-ties, Violeta Duck is still wearing her purple one since 2019. Blanca lost her red one sometime in 2021.
I tried the spiral-bands, elastic and snap-on. You need three hands to attach those on a flailing duckling.
Since 2019 i have not put a leg band on any duck.

I still wasn't myself today after spending six hours at the vet yesterday, but the little bugger is doing much better. It still is not pooping as it should, but the bulge in his rump is not as bad as it was yesterday.
I was thinking about giving him(?) some stool softening tea. I have a lot of fruit teas here, that i drink iced when it is hot outside. I also thought about some water, sweetened with Erythritol which is a known stool softener.
I have not seen him pooping the whole day, but he must have relieved himself as that bulge has not been grown since yesterday and he's devouring food like a duckling…

Sorry for being so quiet the last few weeks. Had internet issues. Still do, I think I need a new router.

Hatching this year has gone much better than last year. I have 17 ducklings still inside, 13 have moved outside, and 12 more eggs left to hatch. Of those 17, there are many that were taken from one of my scovies. She's a great sitter, not so great mother.

I can't believe how fast goslings grow! At about 5 weeks old, they are as big as full grown ducks, or bigger! They still follow me around although they're a bit more independent now, and still sleep inside at night. I absolutely adore them! :love

Peanut-Butter! - Some of the really clever ones take two or three attempts. I lock the trap door one or two times and bait the trap to make them feel save and then…
It's what ever works for you. I caught one the very first night with my Marshmellows and hot dog and the next night got the other one. Haven't had any more problems, knock on wood. I hope that you get yours too. I also bought a brand new trap off of Amazon and I think that helped too.

When my little Call Duckling female had this problem I kept holding her and soaking her bottom in warm water. Finally one time after I was gently picking near her vent a large piece of poop came out and when I put her in the water a big poop exploded out of her. She was just fine after that and started growing normally and eating better. Now she is bigger than her mate and does just fine so I was lucky that she was finally able to expel it. Good luck with your little one Frank.
