Beyond our own flock, we are raising some chicks to sell as started birds, and have been very upfront with our kids, telling them that they are not our birds, but we are taking care of them for other families.
Nonetheless, my tenderhearted four year old fell in love with one, and despite our...
This weekend the Fresno Bee ran a positive article on urban illegal hens.
Fresno urbanites connect to ag by keeping chickens
There was a lot of heated commenting on this article.
Does this mean that getting hens legalized is going to be an uphill battle, or is this normal?
I live in an unincorporated neighborhood. The only thing I can find that outlaws chickens is the original housing agreement, which new homeowners still have to sign a paper saying they agree to the terms. It's all pretty reasonable except two things. It bans chickens....and people of color...
They were from Chino Valley Ranchers.
I incubated 6
1 - My son dropped
2 - Became putrid
3 - Hatched
They said "Enjoy by May 17", so I think that made them a little over three weeks old when I incubated them. I am definitely enjoying them, and ironically they hatched on May 17.
Okay, I have been having a horrible hatching season so far.
The first batch of shipped eggs, I intervened too soon.
The second batch, I cooked with a temp spike.
The third hatch, my bulb went out long enough to kill the batch.
So imagine my dismay when I went to check on the eggs and I was...
I left out some store bought eggs for a recipe that called for room temp eggs.
I cracked one, then stuck my thumbs in it to open it up. When I did that a bit of the egg white shot out about two inches.
Was this just a fluke or more sinister?
A lot of posts and poultry books talk about "when a chick is fully feathered" but the time frame for this varies by breed.
So what do you guys define as "fully feathered"
(I ask because I have some young ones that have feathers everywhere except under their wings, and I want permission to put...
I noticed one person had something like "Violated Rules: ".......
and another person had "___________" as their user title.
Is this new, and can a violed rules person come back?
Just curious, I donn'y plan on breaking any rules.
So there was a man up to no good in our neighborhood, and I called the Sherif. We have the number programmed into our phone.
As soon as someone answered I went into a long detailed account of what had happened. I was pretty excited and spoke quickly
At the end I finally took a breath, and...
This is daughters fav chicken, I posted about in early Jan.
I got rid of the other BW roos, but this last week been taking a closer look at Sarah.
She is about 17 weeks old, and though I didn't think there were any saddle feathers, but now I think I do.
Can a chicken wait to form saddle...
I have some cortunix quail chicks that are about 1 week old and getting their wing feathers in.
The problem is that two of the chicks have feathers that come out instead of laying flat against their bodies.
I have seen this condition in ducks and geese at the park, and I thought I had read...
I can see our chickens nest from inside the house, which is convenient because I can see when both our layers have laid.
Today I noticed that we had two eggs, but it was a couple of hours before I could go out and get them. When I did, there was only one egg!
The girls have laid one a day...
There is someone selling Marans chicks on craiglist, as "Kelly Cratty Cuckoo Marans ".
I don't plan on showing or breeding myself, but I do want to support breeders that are improving their breeds.
Is the "Kelly Cratty" line something to desire?
What can I do to ensure I am buying quality...
I saw this while trolling craigslist.
He/she is offering a pair of Orloffs free as long as you'll breed them and send some chicks.
Also is interested in contacting people who want to breed
cubalayas,
sumatras,
spangled Russian Orloffs,
black minorcas,
and silver-laced polish...
I went into Petsmart and asked where the hygrometers were.
The guy politely told me that they hadn't got any in yet, but they had a nice chameleon.
(because everyone knows that a "hygrometer" is a type of lizard! )
It made me laugh, but I went to admire the lizards anyway, he was nice and I...
Option 1
Day one starts when you put the eggs in. So if you put in the eggs on a Monday the hatch (21 days) will happen on a Sunday.
Option 2
Like Bdays, Day one is not reached until 24 hrs are up. So if you put the eggs in on Monday, the hatch will happen on Monday.
We are using the chickbator for the class hatching project. (You know, the spaceship ones )
Does anyone know what type of bulb it takes?
The teacher dropped one while showing the class, and it needs a new bulb.
I am looking to buy some fertile eggs driving within an hour drive from Fresno.
This is for my daughters preschool class, and I am hoping to get them by 2/11. (sorry short notice)
I know I can get them shipped, but I am hoping to avoid USPS.
