Alternative to hardware cloth

Hello an TIA for any information offered.

I am in the panning process of out coop. I see that the recommended material to use is 1/2'' hardware cloth for any openings. I have access to 1/2 expanded metal and was wondering if this would be an acceptable alternative? Looks strong . Also looks like it would rust.
