That’s a great set up.

I am rethinking my outside run now that I know the hawk is around, I need to get some mesh over top asap.

Anyone have any suggestions? The run is 16’ wide and about 90’ long - but broken up by big trees.
Just remember, if you use a soft netting, or string lines, you may eventually find yourself having to disentangle a bird with really nasty talons and a serious beak. Before we got chickens, when we were just recently arrived on island DH got to help another farmer (where I was gardening in 2020 & 2021) with this task. Welding gloves suggested. A red shouldered hawk made a dive and got stuck in the anti-hawk string lines the guy had up. Fun times.

I’m trying to train Dakota to speak. She’s inside the chickens room, watching a looping YouTube video of Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room show. (If those birds can talk and sing, so can Dakota!)
:gig
I’m only thinking selflessly about her future. When her egg laying days are over, she’s still going to need a job. A talking, singing chicken would be a hoot!:woot

Hi people. Remember the sick hen I tried to help last weekend who died a couple days later? The necropsy results already came in. She had salpingitis AND peritonitis and they went septic. She also had a bacterial lung infection. The poor little thing didn’t really have a chance. How kind they were to take her in and try to save her. At least she wasn’t taken by a predator.
Awwww poor wee thing. Glad you tried to help, and happy they gave her security and safety in her last days.

Whoa ya welders gloves for sure 😳

I think I will put hazard tape throughout the mesh so birds can see it, I was more worried about smaller song birds, but I guess raptors would also be a problem!

Well that was a complete waste of time.
I found bricks. I figured the configuration so they fitted in the nest box. I cleaned the bricks. I brought them up to the Chicken Palace. I dried them off in the sun. I put the top layer in the oven to heat them up. I constructed a cardboard cover for them. I placed it all carefully in 'Maggie's box', I covered it with pine shavings, I put pine cat litter in the lower part so the liquid poo would be absorbed.
I felt pretty pleased with myself.
Maggie took one look at it and went into the next box along.
:he
Sounds like all the boxes or none of them need to get treated
