I’m up late, remember an old friend. A Christian brother of mine, who only wanted to spread the gospel. He was an old school mate, and I loved him a lot. As he was dying of cancer, he asked me if I could take him to church one last time, yes I did. In his wheelchair we went to church. Seven days later, he was gone. I’m hoping that there is room in heaven for me, because Brian deserves all the crowns he can get ! Love you my friend and rest in peace, till I see you again friend.

Damage!

It looks like Glynda caught frostbite in the last cold snap. It has taken a few days for it to show up but it has the potential to take all of her comb tips. Only time will tell. I have some hope since it has taken this long for it to show up.

No one else is any the worse for the cold snap. Just Glynda. This will be the first time one of mine has ever suffered from frostbite.

Oh poor girl. And poor you.
It doesn’t look too severe though she might lose some tips.

She may be injured or likely is at least quite bruised from the hawk’s talons gripping her body holding her down, they have a lot of strength in their feet just for this reason. Butters lost feathers afterwards where she was grabbed, there were a couple talon wounds on her shoulder and back. She moved stiffly for some days. They grew in a different color too, light golden, she had them until she molted later that year. The pecks as you say could be more or less superficial, you see no skin broken around her neck? The hawk may have been inexperienced, giving you time to rescue her. She probably was squirming like crazy against those talons, successfully avoiding a solid killing bite until you got to her. I had only gone inside to get an apple, so it lasted for less than a minute. The laurel tree is what slows the hawks, it's very dense and they have to crawl to get under it, so it buys the hens a few precious minutes. Her body seems ok, she's got her mobility back, it's her head that worries me. She has one eye closed very often and she makes a wheezing sound when she speaks. I don't know what I could do to help her because there's no outer wound I can see anymore.

Sorry about this! I hope some of her tips heal. Were the temperatures the coldest one you've had since you've kept chickens ? Or is there any chance that changing the coop's roof have affected the level of humidity inside ?

Here are some french butts for Friday.

Gastounet's tail feathers tend to do strange things when it's damp.

These are my two bigger ex-batts butts : Brune (first) hasn't molted whereas Nougat has. Makes a difference in feathers quality even though Nougat didn't grow hers back completely normally.

Cannelle's butt is now perfect and she is doing great. Demonstrating once again that chickens looking very sick can survive.

I suspect, if it doesn't get hit again this winter, that they will be fine. I am pretty sure that ?Minnie? Dotty? points that looked the 'pale/swollen' like this eventually recovered, and only the one with the real blackened tip lost part of it. Maybe @RoyalChick can confirm.

It does look like a fair amount, but, again, it seems relatively mild in terms of depth of damage.

Yes, you are right. Dotty only lost the tip that turned fully black. The other one recovered fully.
Prior to joining BYC Maggie had some frostbite and I am not sure she lost anything in the end although for ever after she tended to get blue tips to her comb when stressed.

Look closely at Phyllis' bum and you can see that she is starting into the frosted tips trend. Last year it was the one off colored wing feather. This year she is spring frosted tips. All you fashion conscious hens out there should take note.
