I am riding today, so you will get lots of pony pics a little after noon! Look at my new boots!

Momma Hen is very happy in her new nest. Her 4 chicks are doing very well. I tried to check the other 4 eggs, safely did it with 1 which I heard scratching coming from inside. I did not risk trying to check the others, she is just so angry and pecky that I am afraid she will bust a egg. I will give her to tomorrow before I pull the eggs and check them if there is no visible progress. The old warrior even managed to NOT get frostbite. As much grief as she gives me I will freely admit she is my best hen and there will never be another like her.

I also read some were sad I had her pulled off the hill before she finished hatching. It really was in her best interest. I do not think she had came off the nest in 3 days and she was starving when I got her settled. She inhaled a whole can of wet cat food plus a handful of chicken feed. Here I can safely monitor the rest of the eggs progress and if I sense a chick is in trouble assist hatching if I need to. Plus now I do not worry about a predator finding that nest or any falling off into the creek on their way down. I was a nervous wreck yesterday before we got them. Those chicks are talkative. They announced to the world they were there.

That was me - I was only kidding - I was imagining her marching into town with her chicks in tow and announcing to you what she had done. It was an image that made me smile.
She is wonderful and I am so glad you have managed to bring them all to safety.

Totally understand this, I wasn't one of the sad ones - I did worry that the chicks' peeping would draw attention to them all and somebody would get them, the unhatched eggs, and Momma Hen too. But - for the future, I do wonder where she will take off to when she goes broody next though, if you've blocked her cliff rock nest which turned out to be a successful spot (overhang from some weather, no frostbite, difficult access, etc) , will she go off to find a suitable one even further away? I am not telling you what to do, but have you thought of that - the bad thing you know might be better than the bad thing you don't, and what do you think?

I am waiting for March and April to get a Lavender Orpington.
The question is... does he have a chicken similar to Grandma?

Perhaps, but Grandma is the oldest and the biggest crybaby in the group.
He doesn't, but I do...3 pics of Pear
