Sleepy heads...

Tonight there is a pile of chickies snoozing together. That never happens!

It looks like probably Blanche, Sophia, Dorothy and Misty all in that corner.

I think that is Rose snoozing with Mr P - he generally hasn't liked her - but she has been putting her foot down wanting to snooze on top of that nest box! And Queen Penelope has her spot all to herself.

I am seriously thinking about taking down the top roost, which would leave the highest one at about 4 feet. Easier to check on them and to clean it. I had to put that top one at first when I was tempting them away from the electrical conduit. But the bigger they get the less I like them jump/flying down from that high.
My roosts are at 4', but that one top of the nest box is over 5'. No one flies down from it, Mr P fell off it one day - and I was watching the camera when it happened. He was showing Misty (I think it was) where to lay an egg, he was eggcitedly, scratching and pecking and showing her the top of the nest box.

She hopped up to take a peek, he backed up and 'vlip' fell off the edge :lau

Misty turned and looked for him... as if to say, where did you go? I was at work and burst out laughing - I am sure the people there thought I was a nutter haha!

Anyways when I get home in the Spring I am revamping my Hen House, I want to move the nest boxes around - may just tear them up and make new ones in that corner. Then tear out the roosts and make them no higher than 3' for the Silkies. Right now they can hop down the steps I have made, but sometime the bigger gals get rough housing and a few times poor Curly has been knocked off the roost - more than once I had to get dressed go out to the barn, and make sure she was ok!!

Mine (fat as they are) still make the 8 foot jump from the rafters every day. If my rafters were higher up, the chooks would climb higher up too. :old :idunno
Yes! What is with that! Even that brat Curly who flies like crap wants to go way up high! At least she has tried to launch herself off into the abyss like Marty does hahaha!

EDIT - Hasn't tried to launch... not 'has tried'

There is a ramp all the way up to the rafters also, rarely used by them.
Most of my gang will use the steps I made for them, thankfully! Mum helps Penelope down, she is getting old now and doesn't seem to be able to hop down very well.

The Grey Girls and Buttercup will fly out the Hen House door when I am letting them out - Mum gets out there later than I normally get out so they are all mostly on the ground by the time she lets them out.

But those Grey Gals - well more than once Misty has launched herself at me and I have caught her hahahahaha!

Bear!
This was a project I was on a few years ago - I would go for a run down that road daily, and most days the guys would say 'did you see the bear in the ditch?'.... I never did and wouldn't believe them - until I saw it myself haha!

My camera in my truck - like my cracked windshield?!

That looks like a damn dodge ram crack! :gig But better than a plumber’s crack!

Blueberry is so pretty and cute!!
Thank you. Blueberry is one of my dad's 2 personal hens as he puts it. She and Squirrel are not allowed to go anywhere. We can now say he has 3 personal hens. I planned the minute Ducky hatched to keep her if she was a pullet in October due to her blue coloring. Thankfully she is indeed a girl and is going to look just like her momma Blueberry. So much so that dad has taken notice of her in the last week and dared me to get rid of her she was his.
