Here were two other approaches I read about:

https://www.theguardian.com/food/20...ound-waves-eggs-ethical-slaughter-male-chicks

https://www.timesofisrael.com/now-y...ns-before-they-hatch-instead-of-culling-them/

Both seem practical - and I love the sound one - maybe playing Mozart to the broody hens will get them to lay all girls! Of course I hope it isn't some awful noise that upsets the hens. The one with the male marker is clever but I suspect will never be acceptable to consumers so the eggs will get wasted.
I like the idea of the bio marker, I wonder how early it can be detected…?

I believe we can have a Roo. I hope no one says to separate him from the flock. He is getting aggressive from what I hear. Pecking at the Brahma's feet. Though, that could just be because it looks tasty.
We might end up doing a multi coop setup with these chickens from what I'm hearing.
How big is their coop? Also some bales of straw and some obstacles to hide under hip on top of, some items for stimulation so they do t get bored.

I looked on their website and they say immediately after the egg is laid they can detect the marker.
Which sounds great but is a bit in contradiction to the sound one which claims that they can change the gender to be female once laid (which sounds weird but actually is quite credible as there are lots of examples in birds and reptiles where gender is determined by environmental factors).

In regards to the Roo issue, the old adage to not borrow trouble comes to mind (I am so guilty of this!) If there is a wee fella that you really do want to try and keep then do it and see if they cant work it out. It’s possible they could.

This Roo issue has been on my mind as well. I have decided to try again when at least one (probably more) of these babies inevitably shows itself to be a boy. I feel like despite the outcome with Oreo I gave him a shot at being a gentleman and I will do the same going forward till I get lucky with a good Roo or two like Mr. P ;)
I think the fact Mr P was fully grown and had been with another Roo who was beating the crap out of him had a lot to do with his behaving.

That and likely his breed is quieter.

WHAT THE BLEEP???

How did Mrs Clean-egg get Peronitis??
Today she wasn't herself, just sitting in the corner doing nothing. Both she and I knew it was her time, but I don't have the gut to do the processing so I called my friend that obviously has a stronger gut. The worst part was that I had to hold her legs while my friend processed.

Anyway, I had come across @ManueB's thread about her hen Caramel, that from what I believe died of peronitis as well. So when I saw that burst yolk ALL over her insides, I knew.
She had a LOT of water inside her, and those burst yolks. Little to no feed in her crop.

I'm sorry for your hen, @LhickenChicken. Had you not realized before she passed that she had been laying internally ?
I was heartbroken when I learned Caramel had EYP, I had missed all the clues. Now I've come to realize it will probably happen to all my ex-batts, as to many layers. It's the price they pay for us having pets that make us breakfast.
I keep Caramel in my avatar to remind me of all I learned when she passed.

In happier news : my partner finally built a small second coop inside the actual run and look who's inside making a mess.

Oh so cute!
Five? Why did I think only four?
They look very comfy in there.
🥰🥰

They do not have a coop yet. They are small enough to fit in a big tub, which is where they sleep for the night. They have a big enclosed run. I'll have to find some junk to put in there. After the chick died everyone is getting all worried about what's in that area and stuff like that. They were tearing bits off of the box that was in there and running around with it.
We are going to have to build "the creatures" a coop soon.
