In one year, (a heartbreaking time) my chicken numbers, went from fifteen down to five.
In one year the social dynamics of group functions, ie church and civic groups, dwindled to practically nothing. Masks are a normal accessory now. (Even if some people, still won't believe or accept the necessity for them). "That was run on sentence, wasn't it"? Oh well, We all must make due, and persevere ! :old
That is so sad to lose all those chickens.

Whatever it takes for dear Maggie!!!

It’s leaf pile season here, and today I just gave them their first three piles. They are free ranging, so only Flash has checked it out... Sadly, no pics of that, but here is one of the piles. It has bay leaves, pine needles, twigs, pine cones and California live oak leaves.

Looks yummy to me!

Our Araucanas all lay blue eggs as far as I know. Alice does and so does Pepper who is a cross.

The breed standard in Australia is for the tail (not "rumpless"). Apparently it is the rumpless and ear-tuft genes that are associated with the lethal gene.

It's hard to tell in the photo, but Pepper's egg is ever so slightly greener than Alice's

Absolutely beautiful! And the color difference it’s quite clear.

People would not buy blue eggs. The cream Legbar almost died out in the 70s demand was so low in the states and England.
When I give away my eggs I always have to explain to 1st timers that the blue eggs are fine for eating & perfectly normal inside. Even my mother, who grew up on a farm, thought I was pranking her when she got her 1st blue eggs. When I was growing up all eggs were white ~ though people seemed to think brown eggs were healthier. Our blue eggs, being smaller & denser, are heavier & richer than most of the bigger brown eggs.

Very Sad Anniversary

Today is the 5th anniversary of Elphie's passing. Here is the link to the story of her life and her passing for those of you who do not know it.

I feel I need to celebrate the hen that started my path to living these wonderful silly animals. Here is Elphie's life in pictures.

I was able to access the link about her life, but I couldn’t find the story of her passing. I was wondering what happened to her.

:hugs I understand. I lost all my 1st entire flock in a matter of weeks. They were rescues & past their use by date when I got them. They got some extra time with us & a much better quality of life but we went from 8~0 in a couple of weeks.
That is very sad. You must have been traumatized. I’d have bawled my eyes out.
