I'm so sorry, Shad. I know these things happen with your set up but It's still distressing. She's done well to get away. I've read backwards [sorry, Bob, I know that distresses you] so I'm relieved she's doing ok.
If there are any serious daytime predators it takes a very serious run to keep them out. Goshawks are particularly difficult because they will hammer straight through chicken wire, often injuring themselves in the process. Daylight hunting foxes are just as dangerous. Thankfully, here the chickens can run for cover and mostly they make it. Given the number of hawk strikes we have here (it's been about two a month that I know about this year) the chickens do very well. If Mel had been in a run she would be dead now.
This isn't a good place to keep chickens. If you lock them up tight enough to keep the weasels and hawks out the chickens are in prison basically. It's always a hard call I find but I would rather they were free.

I’m not sure what is more shocking... the size difference or the look on Lavender’s face! That is one grumpy chicken...
😂 Poor Lavender. She was moulting as well as broody & a not very happy chicken. The bantams normally like to get under her fluff & pretend they are chicks again but as they were also broodie they were having their own issues! :lau

I’ve been doing a little long term planning garden wise... and it has been expanded into hedgerows for chicken cover. My seeds just came in the mail (they cleared customs!!! Yay) I’m planning to plant a Blackthorn hedge, prunus spinosa, which should provide both a cattle barrier and plenty of cover for the free range ladies. Also apparently good for making Gin and tart preserves.

Ooooh. Lots of pics/ I'm a hedgerow fan.

I have blckthorn bushes outside my house. I've trimmed the lowest branches so the chickens can get under. They work really well. Even in winter the chickens seem to know that the spikes make an attack very difficult.

Well, I’m starting from seed, so I don’t expect things too quickly! We have Hawthorns and some nasty Roses, the chickens love the roses. There are vining roses, native roses, inroduced ornamental roses, and a nasty hybrid between the native and ornamental varieties. They love to intertwine with the bramble/blackberries or climb the hawthorns, which creates a very nasty thorny mess. I’m also planning on taking some salmon berry cuttings and I’m hoping if I put my raspberries in the mix they will get some protection from the deer.
