I am definitely hoping that is all it is. When I took the photo I looked at the back of my hands and they are way more banged up than Dotty's comb, so maybe I am being a worry-wort!
By the way, do you know whether it was Minnie or Dottie who laid the egg the other day?

When you first described the differences between their combs - great way to tell them apart! - I wondered, Well what do chickens do about the varying combs in their appearance, does it become a problem because they look so different from each other? My birds notice the tiniest things about appearance. Maybe BECAUSE they are all so alike? It's mostly little pecks, especially if some dander or something has landed on them, so it's like grooming pecks. Once I did see one go after something around the other's beak and eye. So much so that the peckee kept pulling her head away and then finally down, and got a peck on the back of her head for that last move so she walked away. First time seeing that. I think that was a dominance thing. Something different, or is it all tied together?
It sounds more like grooming with a light touch of pecking order affirmation in the mix. Pecking order bust ups are generally more violent (and alarming) than you described.

I like your description! Like on a menu - I'll have that please: "Grooming with a light touch of pecking order affirmation" :thumbsup

I have no clue! My bet is Minnie as her comb and face got red first - but they are both the same now and they have both been checking out the nest boxes together (which is rather cute).
I have had one tiny blue (really green) egg each day for the last 3 days. I didn't think they would lay an egg every day (and I really hope they don't make a habit of that!). so maybe they are taking turns?
Hard to tell!
I may have to spare a camera from the rodent wars and train one on the next boxes so I can figure it out.

Sooooo, I was wondering @micstrachan how you were getting on with the book?
I’m on page 76 and enjoying it so far!
