What would be a sign that she is getting too cold? Wouldn't she hide it? Crouching down and not moving, trying to fluff up what she has left? It is sooo cold, it was 8F this morning here!

Shrinking into herself, not moving a lot if at all, shivering. They will shiver.

You too. It is already frigid here. I keep meaning to ask what heated waterer you use and if you like it. I am getting a bit fed up of heading out with a pitcher of warm water to make holes in the ice for the Princesses to drink through!

This is what I use. You cannot hang it. It must sit on something. The cord is heavy enough that it tips it to one side and the water runs out if you try to hang it.

Some Purple Corn before the Storm

I thought I'd give the ladies a warm up this morning. It's cold out without wind for the first time this winter.

Aurora is still molting badly and Sansa has started as well. Sansa does have bare spots on her bum but it looks like she can still cover it. I'm worried for Aurora and I'm going to keep an eye on her for signs she is too cold.

I just love it when her and Sydney stand next to each other. Sydney is like a negative and Sansa the color photo made from that negative.

Me Three! Don’t ask this Canadian about cold weather keeping... I don’t do cold. As soon as it dips below freezing here all bets are off. My waterers freeze up, the chickens refuse to leave their roosting boxes, I panic and start stuffing them in the barn. And the worst I’ve had here is -5C for a day or two or about 23F. I didn’t see any signs of the cold other than absolute disgust for the white stuff in their runs and a refusal to go outside.

Around here we can go for weeks in the single digits F (-14 to -18 C), dipping into the negatives and up into the teens at times. Somehow the chickens survive, but they sure seem happy when things turn Spring-like.

I have been using a simple rubber bowl and then just smashing the ice with a rock or melting holes in it by adding warm water. Then I keep water overnight in the garage where it doesn't freeze, and bring that out in the morning.
It works fine but when it gets really cold is a bit of a pain. And of course now that I have squeezed the car into the garage there is less room for the waterer!

You will be happy with this. I've had mine for years. I used to put a heat lamp over top their waterer. Dangerous but all I had.
