I just returned from town with a bag of chicken treats. Was attacked when I brought it out to the chickens. Beethoven-Hen pecked and pecked at it, until I was able to get it open.
My girls do that too. Very poor manners! They get up in my face, peck the treat bags and my fingers! They have no patience! 🤣

I would keep antibiotics on hand at all times. I would not worry too much about the expiration date. In fact, I do keep antibiotics on hand at all times, along with Corrid and 2 different wormers. You should be able to get safeguard goat wormer I would think. I keep nutridrench handy for instant energy along with assorted syringes etc.

With antibiotics so hard to get and needed immediately, I keep them on hand.

Yep, I actively hoard medications, and keep them past their expiration dates (I usually look them up to see if it’s a hard reason for the “expiration”... or if it could be potentially dangerous, but if well stored most meds are good for a very long time!) that was why I still had the Veraflox on hand... if I had known the prescription only thing was coming and that I would be raising chickens without a vet that will treat them I would have stocked up before they started restricting them. Corrid and Safeguard are by prescription only products here. Although there is a horse wormer I may be able to get still. That feed store is such a PITA I try to avoid it whenever possible.

I swear, the Next time I get a prescription for antibiotics I’m not taking them... I will store them away, wait out the course and then go back to the dr for a second round! Shhhhh...

I do have a small chicken first aid kit I’ve built up, as well as a more thorough human one. Sadly it is very hard to get vet care here for chickens and most things aren’t available without a prescription. I have triple antibiotic ointment, bandages, vet wrap, saline wound wash, baby aspirin, antihistamine tablets, enrofloxacin (at the end of its shelf life though) and powdered calcium supplements on hand, as well as monistat cream and a laxative for crop issues. @CrazyChookChookLady , I am out of iodine and haven’t been able to source more, or betadine. I have rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, Epsom salts, and coconut oil as well. Vaseline, preparation H, and personal lubricant for eggbinding and prolapses. I have a small amount of mite and lice destroying powder (that may/will cause cancer and is no longer available at all in Canada) and I might be able to “liberate” some ivermectin from the farm if they still have any.

It’s antibiotics and other “medications” that are very hard to source. I did manage to get my cat’s vet to prescribe me some amprolium for my “pet birds” but he could only order it by the gallon, so I am totally set if I ever run into coccidiosis again. I would like to add a wormer, but good luck getting my hands on any.

I'm at work now, but let's talk more and see what we can get too you, even if not right now...

I'd totally keep her and after quarantine add her to your flock. I adore my buff!!! View attachment 2452756
This is Goldie, my lead hen. She's one of my roginal 6, she'll be 4 in the spring.
Interesting, I was doing a bit of a check on Queenie, and saw how gray in the front her leg scales are, wondered if that was normal! I see it probably is. You've got a fluffy ball of chicken with Goldie there! I am making calls to locate at least part of her flock if possible. I am totally into caring for her but she must be traumatized and terribly lonely now. She saw something in the room where she is and started making a low tapping/purring/rumble sound, not a happy sound at all. I don't know what to do for her about that. :(

I will tell no one. 🤫

Rewarding

When I designed and built the coop I built it to accommodate snow storms like we have just had. Since I built it we have not had a storm such as this. It is very pleasing to see it working as intended. In addition to hanging out in the coop, they have been making great use of the porch. Phyllis especially so.

I am very pleased. 😊 (If I do say so myself 😉)

I have done this many times, Tippie loves her chicken sling, and it was very helpful in healing Hoppy’s leg. Roostie though will have none of it... he also won’t do the “calm down” thing when I wrap/burrito him. To soak his foot I have to hold him, hunched over the little tub of water holding a ten pound rooster for twenty minutes isn’t either of our idea of a good time. At first the soaking helped, softening the bumble so I could remove it. But now that it’s in his foot and the foot is swollen and hot it seems to cause him pain.

Are there any tack stores near you? I'm really thinking he needs a good foot packing. I googled hoof packing in Canada and came up with this...

Something to help pull the infection out while cooling and soothing the skin would you best bet for recovery until the antibiotics come in. He'll probably be humiliated, but wrapping his foot with some cotton batting and vet wrap would give him a bit of a boot with shock absorption.

A small stuffed animal will sometimes help. That's usually more for peeps but it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot.

She is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL buff, I think it's wonderful that you are trying to fine her flock, but don't feel bad it you can't, she'll be happy with you and your flock.
