I just ready a study from 2014 where they utilized 7 to 8 mg/kg of lidocaine intravenously with no ill effects on the chicken. The study was designed to try and determine the validity of the "common knowlege" that lidocaine was fatal to chickens. The article calls for follow up studies for further confirmation. There is also anecdotal reports on BYC where people have successfully used it for bumblefoot surgery. Topical lidocaine should not get to anywhere near the blood levels used in the study.

Obviously it is up to you. If you think that he can handle the pain, you may not want to take the risk.
Sounds like a plan... we have discussed again, and in light of the weather, we are delaying until DH is back on Thursday. It’s cold and miserably wet=mud, and our mud=liquid fecal matter. This will let Andrew get some sort of topical numbing agent as well as hopefully some styptic powder. We are due for drier weather Wednesday through Saturday. Also we will be able to do the procedure in the afternoon, so he will be less active and settle in for the night afterwards.

That is the crappy part of chicken math, Subtractions. No matter how they come when you raise them from chicks and spoil them like I tend to do it hurts. It will really hurt if the 3 Marans girl go. They are my friendliest and most loveable birds. I'm doing this out of respect to my neighbors too. I do not have any restrictions on numbers I can have, or how many boys. But, Crybaby crows all day long...and causes my normally quite Marans boys to get into crowing matches with him. Now I love crowing...but all day long, I've been ready a few times to go out and strangle them myself. Yesterday I ended up stomping out and shouting at Drummie to shut up, after his initial shock he gave me a look of "how DARE you yell at me" and in spite crowed back at me. I tossed one of the grooming brushes in his general direction and he spent the rest of the day when he saw me complaining. I did apologize and make friends again at roosting time with special hand fed treats.
Sorry, just laughing at the Roo interactions! :love

This sounds like a solid plan.

Stella is lovely. I'm on my 2nd Golden, and will always have at least 1 from here out. My first one passed at 12 1/2 years old and my current one is 8. Personally I think there is nothing cuter then a golden puppy, but I really have a soft spot for the older ones who's starting greying around the face.

This is my favorite picture and will treasure it always. My old girl Ginnie 2 days after we had gotten Gracie.

They are registered Hereford pigs. They are literally bacon seeds. 4-H is very popular in our area so the kids raise the pigs as a project through the year and then they show them at local and state level. The pigs are then either auctioned off, for food, and the kid keeps the money, or they are kept for breeding.

This the mom to the newest piglets.

Bacon Seed! First thing that popped into my head “awwwww, cute little bacon seeds!” I waited to see if someone else said it though. Nothing tastes better than happy home raised bacon... (I have an epic bacon and prosciutto addiction, it was a daily joke at my last job “hey look, Kristen’s buying bacon again 🙄”)
No not at all!!!🤣🤣
Well I wonder, I think you would be ok for the first few months... there is a person here with pet pigs, and they started with a commercial pink X. She broke her leg at almost Two years old going down steps, and was put down and given a burial. They now have a kunekune and a potbellied.

White Out!

It is approaching white out conditions here. How are you doing @RoyalChick ?

The big run is keeping the snow out successfully so they can hang out in the run while Phyllis has decided to sit on the roost and watch the snow out the window.

Total white out for the last few hours. We are somewhere between 16" and 18" but a bit hard to tell because of the drifting. There are strong wind gusts now and then that swirl it around and dump it in random places. It isn't forecast to let up until tomorrow afternoon.
The Princesses seem content hanging out inside.
Their open 'pasture' runs are completely filled with snow - it is a bit hard to tell without knowing the bones of the Chicken Palace but in this photo they should be able to go through the grey door (and another grey door further down that is almost completely obscured) and out into the pasture run. But that is all one big snowdrift. You can see a lot more snow in their covered run now too.

I am a little worried by the snow blowing inside, but it is only a dusting and it really isn't that cold now so I keep telling myself it is OK. I hope I am right! You can see it on the ground here in the foreground in front of the nesting boxes.

I affectionately refer to Goldens as the dumb blondes of the dog world. They LOVE everybody and everything and are so sweet and goofy. ❤❤

We are now entering the second phase of the storm. Our winds are picking up and now the snow if falling fast again.

I peeked put at the chooks and most are still in the coop, except Mama. She's been out off and on all day. The coops have fresh plastic on them to keep the snow and wind out. I think She's enjoying the peace and quiet. ❤
