My momma hen does that, hide under the hay pile to lay eggs. Last summer she hid so good that I feared her gone. Nope 3 weeks later turned up with 10 chicks in tow. Followed her that night when she took them back to the nest to put them to bed, she had squeezed underneath so far that If I had found her nest there was no way I could have reached it to move it and break her up. Evil hen. And of those 10, only 2 pullets which I rehomed since while I love momma hen, ok, tolerate most times I want nothing to do with any more game or game cross hens.
It's a good thing I found her heavens knows when i would have got to that bale 😂 that's were the gallows humour comes in.... All's well that ends well.

Another BFTP:
Ooooohhhh, my, @Ribh...what is Alpia? 😍 😍(I'm swooning heartily here!) 😍 She is a gorgeous hen...even if I can only see her backside!

I know you have said you have Barred Rocks, but the barring doesn't look anything like mine/U.S. BRs. Her colouring is just delightful.

Awww, why not? They are sooo independent and self sufficient!!!:lau:lau

I just had a freak out couple of hours...

Missing chicken 😣

I walked this property looking for chicken tracks, I tracked a fox tracks who cut across my property I check for chicken tracks around the manure pile. I just couldn't see where Whiskers got to.

Only conclusion is a hawk or other bird of prey got her 😟

I check inside this barn everywhere climbing up a mountain of baled shavings... No Whiskers...

Poor Blanche just kept hanging out on the hay pile quietly chortling.... Wait? What?

That isn't Blanche making that noise is it? Where the H E double L is that coming from? I checked the whole pile for spots they can lay eggs - no hen... Yet I can hear a hen chortling... I get down on the ground and see this tiny crevasse and a grey fluffy butt... Stuck in between the bales!!!

OMG dumb arse cluck! What I don't have enough nest boxes? Well I hauled the bale out and there she was - Whiskers Chick-fil-A , I was so furious, glad, happy, and of course could see the gallows humour... I told her she at least had better have laid an egg there... She did 😁

All is well at Bay-de-Verde Acres today. But I told the chickies no one was ever allowed out ever again - or until I can Fix a proper covered run 😂 darn chickens.

Maybe now I can get some work done to pay for that new covered run I need to put up!!!
So scary isn't it. I'm glad no chickens were harmed in the telling of this story.

I'm ready to, I even changed up feed just for her. She wanted to eat the layer pellets but acted like they were in general to big for her so I would crunch them up and she inhaled them. Even though I have 2/3 of a bag left I went to tractor supply and got a 40lb bag of the same thing in I think it said mini pellets. 2nd day using it and I have to put both types of pellets out, Poppy loves the mini pellets, the rest of my girls refused to even acknowledge it so they get the normal pellets.
All the hens at my house prefer smaller pellets, even the big Australorp :idunno I'm just thankful the right pellets are a small size.

Alpia is a Wyandotte bantam [partridge I think]
Here she is brooding with her sister, Wrold.
She's very sweet.
