@micstrachan and/or I think, @ChicoryBlue use a heating pad. Wrap it around the roost, then wrap and old towel around that (to protect the pad & moderate the direct heat some), fasten the towel (ball bungies work great) on and viola', toasty warm roosts. ?@BY Bob might have tried this, too.I think mother nature has gone off the rails!
It was -28C this time yesterday morning, today it is -1C (oh blessed relief!), but short lasting relief, back to -25 by Friday, and a roller coaster ride for the next week at least....
I am looking into some sort of heating system for the actual roosts themselves. To help keep their little legs and feet and bellies warm.
So if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it....
How about Chiyo ? She looks like a fluffy Ninja to me! Secretly waiting her chance to surprise attack! (well surprise attack a mealyworm bag, maybe?I don't mind the name Wasabi, I just do not picture it as a silke's name. I am leaning more toward Hoppy or Puff. According to Rosie this morning I cannot use Hoppy for her, she's saving that name for a Poppy baby. I can use the name Puff if we compromise, "Puffy Wasabi". She went out the door to catch the school bus this morning with a "my Christmas present, I'll name her" tossed at her. She also could very well come with a name we'll see this evening.
The trouble is, the breed descriptions are general traits overall. Each chicken is an individual and can defy one or more of those traits.I honestly don't think those breed descriptions are reliable.
No. I think that was from before the big freeze. That is a wonderful photo.Did you take that today?
Well, 'spelt' : ancient form of spelling (okay, only past tense, not definitively ancient, lol)Spelt: an ancient form of wheat.
Something to be said for 'mutt-dom' too. Hybrid vigor only happens in the first cross between 2 breeds. Mutts generally are healthier because of the varied gene pool, not so prone to one specific disease or another. Think: ancient royal familys. Often had genetic conditions because of 'in-breeding'...mating only within the royal family blood-lines. Whether humans like it or not, diversity is best in so many senses/areas!My best horse I paid a couple hundred dollars for.... Grade horse....
My big expensive Egyptian Arabian mare is an idiot....
Same with my chickies, I am sure even my silkies are likely not 'pure'... There is something to be said for hybred vigor.
Ooooh, should have saved that one for tomorrow (Friday) a lovely fluffy butt it is!@BY Bob is being way too modest with the answer he just posted. He does a lot of things as host to keep us feeling welcome and supportive. In addition he keeps us (mainly) focused on chickens.
Also we are a chatty lot and we like to share pictures of our chickens and learn from each other about their behavior.
Chicken Tax (payable whenever we stray from chicken-talk).
