It's an incredibly difficult and time consuming thing to try and put right, particularly if you have inherited an ongoing problem. The lower beak contains the most receptors closest to the edges from what I have read. Some believe that where it is opaque that there are no receptors there but that isn't what spectrometry shows.
It must be heartbreaking for you given what I've read about what you've taken on.
A bit at a time Kris, that's the best you can do and I applaud you for your efforts.

I think all of us who know something of Kris' story applaud her. She does an amazing job!

No, not at all! I just want to make sure it’s clear that even though we have these girls, we didn’t do this to them, or agree with the practices. Oh dear! I didn't for one second think you had done this. I have read enough to know you are the one helping them recover. Somehow (naive) I assumed they had some injury and somehow it was only this recent set of posts that made me realize it wasn't just a random injury but something someone had actually done to them by trimming their beaks. The last thing I intended was to offend or upset. On the contrary I am amazed and inspired by what you are doing to help them. It was just the sudden realization that someone did that to them intentionally that was a bit of a shock. Still feeling a bit fragile after the fox event so probably didn't make myself clear. So glad you can help them a little.

How is the fox proofing going? I am concerned about your ladies. Has the fox been back?

My sister went last year.. that’s probably as close as I’ll ever get

Hopefully she brought you lots of pictures!!! These days that is my favorite way to travel. Others bringing pictures home works for me. My neighbor went to Cabo San Lucas last summer and brought back some breathtaking photos! I feel like I've been there.

Thanks! I try to pay close attention to them when I’m “helping” them and barely rub their beaks, keeping close attention to how they are responding. Mrs B actually seems to like it, and as I said with access to some hard surfaces most of the girls in with Chickie Hawk have been “working” on their own beaks. They have much less troubles eating now.

I miss being able to Free Range Sammy and his girls, but they keep wanting back into the barn, and with the owl lurking... they were much happier running around outside my big Coop and all the human places, and being forest chickens.

Below is my Chickie Hawk the big daddy rooster of most of my flock. He has some attitude issues towards humans. He is in with the most of my rescue girls. Pics from spring (and the White leghorn X boys in the background were tasty jerks, Sammy’s brothers)

These pictures are from when he was still a young and slightly less aggressive guy, he has settled down some now, but went through a very nasty young adult phase.

He is beautiful! My cockerels are beginning to be a little aggressive to me, but I pick right back and will even follow them to "peck" a couple times more. I'm committed to these little guys, so they will have to learn to get along with me, and know that I'm not afraid of them, which I'm not. I'm bigger and badder.
