Brave Squirrel

The squirrel was back today. He got to the feeder while Lilly was discussing under the coop right behind Hattie in the picture. Rather than disrupt her bath she dispatched Hattie. Hattie was just turning around in this photo. She ran over and chased the squirrel away.

This squirrel thinks it's smart. It better be careful.

I love it when two chooks try to have a dirt-bath in the same space-time continuum! :love

Is this an egg-song or an escort-call?

That’s the quickest she’s stopped shouting for a while. She can go for five minutes!
My best bet is escort. She was looking for the flock & stopped as soon as she saw them. And she ran to join them! :)

She’ll continue even if she can see them though. Which is why I wondered if she was escort-calling for Chickie.
I can only go by mine, who actually rarely call anymore. They'd bellow for someone to come with them to lay & bellow when they were done, even if they could see everyone.

Most of the noise now is my Campines fussing about where to lay.

One needs to bear in mind with the escort call that there are a number of factors that determine whether a hen gives it, when she gives it and what makes her stop. It is not some biologically driven auto response.
Here for example some of the mid rank hens won't give an escort call when there is more than one rooster in the tribe. They learn that the junior rooster is likely to answer the call and this is not who they want.
When Mel gives an escort call the arrival of her son Treacle does not stop her calling; only Cillin will do that. Moon will accept both Cillin and Treacle.
