Yeah, when I see your posts on Daisy, the greatest hen ever, they remind me of Dorothy. She’s actually a California White, 3/4 Leghorn, 1/4 Barred Rock, but her personality is all Leghorn and she’s tiny... much smaller than my late Margo (Brown Leghorn).
She is beautiful!

MaryJanet, what time is it? I was trying to figure out who is on my time zone, but pretty sure you are not? You all good?
@10.05pm it was 3.05pm Brisbane, Queensland time. 2.36pm in Adelaide, South Australia. Does that help?

Just a quick update from the Chicken Palace. I had a bit of a scare and was admitted to hospital as an emergency in the middle of the night I think it was Wednesday. They just released me, fortunately without needing surgery. But I have to ease back to solid food slowly.
Anyway, the chicks seem to have become huge with just a couple of days away from them!
But they are still not quite brave enough to come out of their brooder area but are beginning to be curious.
It is very hot here and I managed to fit hardware cloth shutters to the Palace Windows so the Princesses can enjoy a bit of a breeze at night.
According to the hospital I am supposed to rest over the next few days. My attempts to nap on the sofa were a bit stymied by Nightshade.
That’s it from me. Time I had another nap. View attachment 2215719View attachment 2215720View attachment 2215721View attachment 2215722

Hope you are ok RC! :hugs

Beaks don't really grow back. Some beak injuries will repair themselves but it depends on the type and placement.
What do you think of my poor Barney? If it’s going to be painful for him from now on...
He is certainly tucking in to his food isn't he? :D

Thanks for the beak close ups. Is the darker bit closer to his face where the new hard part is growing in, sort of like a finger nail?

What mutant legs he has! It reminds me of a picture of a woman who had a growth on her head like a horn.

That is kind of creepy... the dark spot at the base of his beak is his undamaged part. the softness, blood, and yellow crusty bits have cleared
I am just catching up - was out of commission for a few days. Sorry if I missed it but how did poor Barney injure his beak? He is a handsome looking fellow I must say!
Thank you! He’s a very sweet Rooster. He was bitten by something and rubbed his beak on the hardware cloth.
Poor boy, he has been through the wars hasn't he? I just love how incredibly red his comb and wattles are!
Thanks, only at war with whatever little nasty bit him... all the damage was pretty much self inflicted!

I live in Adelaide which is in South Australia, so no, I'm not in your time zone. My timezone is Australian Central Standard Time. Ribh, Lozzy and ACM are on Australian Eastern Standard Time.

Yes. The beak is an extremely sensitive organ. It is not as some would have us believe primarily made up of dead keratin. In the second link they explain a bit about how the beak is made up and the tiny receptors that are in it, particularly the lower beak.
Some of the links in the first article are well worth reading.

It was something to go through at 22 years old for sure. We were discussing it today, for obvious reasons, and are amazed that we got through it. You just don't even think about it at the time. You just keep doing what has to be done. It's only when you look back that you see what you did that you appreciate the enormity of it.
Its remarkable what people can cope with when suddenly swept up in such events. You just find a way, especially for those that you love more anything.

So I decided to try the barium sulfate and clavamox for Roxy. She’s happy to be home. No free ranging, since we don’t know what’s upsetting her intestines. Fed her some cooked beef liver (purchased especially for her), which she loved!

Looks like she loved that! It seemed as though she was looking around at the end as if to say "got any more?"
