Leghorns for eggs and fun!Well... I am realizing that if I want enough eggs to give away I need more hens! I have 12 layers at the moment and for the last month or so I’m only getting 5 eggs a day! Well, we eat six eggs a day soooooo..... I’m thinking somewhere around 20... but I don’t know cuz my two year olds have already slowed down so I don’t know how to get this to work without winding up with a lot more than twenty... being as how they start to slow after year one.... I might only have enough to give away at certain times.. when I’m getting plenty. I’d like to give eggs to the firefighters at the stations... since they live there part time...

Never less than two. Always add at least a pair. Your two are just darling!I am clearly out of my league!
I too give eggs away and was following the same logic but I was scared to go past about 10. I have no idea why as the Palace is sized for twice that if you believe the standard numbers (I don't) and by the time I even got to 10 I would be retired and able to accompany them on free-ranging time.
I am definitely doing two more next year - I am having such fun with the two young ladies growing up I just have to do that again!
I'm thinking of a trio next time. Plenty of youngsters to share the older ladies' pecking.Never less than two. Always add at least a pair. Your two are just darling!
I did 3 this time. It worked out well. Always at least 2 though. They need a friend in the pecking order.I'm thinking of a trio next time. Plenty of youngsters to share the older ladies' pecking.
Oh yes, seeing how close they are to each other I couldn't imagine just adding one.Never less than two. Always add at least a pair. Your two are just darling!
I have 14 & am getting 8~9 eggs a day @ present. My older girls are heading for 3/4 years & showing no signs of slowing down: BRS & FavorellXs. I am very happy with their longevity.Well... Always remember, Barred Rock = BroodyI have 14 & am getting 8~9 eggs a day @ present. My older girls are heading for 3/4 years & showing no signs of slowing down: BRS & FavorellXs. I am very happy with their longevity.
My Golden Campine is 2 & still laying really well. So is my Frizzle. The rest of my girls are younger.
I am giving away about 4 dozen eggs a week.
I think a lot depends on the health & longevity of the birds in question. I won't get ISAs for example. Lots of eggs but short lives & sudden deaths.
