Kris, this might be a really dumb idea & you know heaps more about treating this than I do but have you tried drawing ointment on that? otherwise known as ichthammol ointment.
I have looked up this ichthammol ointment and purchased some “Prid”online (it contains this as an active ingredient) I have heard of using this on bumblefoot to draw out the plug and infection. Do you think I should apply it to the top of the foot?
I do not see any one area to open up. I am sure there is no way you can soak it in hot water. If I were to do anything, I would consider removing fluid with a syringe. What we would call a needle aspiration. You really need the antibiotics. :barnie
Yes, the warmish water for soaking it has not gone over well at all. The lack of a lesion or a clear boil near the surface is what is holding me back from attempt lance it. I really need those antibiotics ASAP. I am thinking of maybe increasing the dose of the enrofloxacin while I wait on the amoxy Tyl? Even the drawing salve isn’t due to arrive until the end of December through January 16th. (Just ordered it!)

This is my third bumblefoot issue... fourth if you count Dean’s but that started after poor Roostie’s, and the previous two cleared up quickly with just a little soaking and removal of the infection plug. Dean didn’t even need soaked!.

I could get a new syringe (I know they have some on the farm) and I have some 22 needles from my vet as I got lots of extras when I was giving Whisper subcutaneous fluids. I had just been dealing with ascites and “draining“ Puffy, and it seemed like a wise decision with the opportunity there. I think I could give a needle aspiration a go more easily than trying to lance it. The infection seems fairly deep. DH hates needles and that could complicate things, I really wish I just had a vet... maybe I can book him in with my cat’s vet as a “parrot”? If only my vet didn’t know me so well...

Without a clear pus collection point I think the syringe is a bad idea. More likely to introduce new infection from the skin unless you can ensure surgical sterile conditions.
I could try and get Icthamol here and mail it to you, or just send you my barely touched tube if you want to pm me your address. I would do the same with antibiotics if I knew how to get my hands on any.
You can make your own drawing salve. I have never done it but it relies on clay kaolin and charcoal. Lots of recipes on line.

Thank you... but I don’t know that it would get here any sooner, between the border, Covid, and the holidays, the mail system seems a little overwhelmed here. I literally phoned my relatives and told everyone I’m not posting anything for Christmas until 2021...

I can sterilize the foot well enough for a procedure (and I’m honestly hoping it’s some innocuous infection and not the staph of the bumblefoot I was treating that is causing the swelling) I kept it clean and changed the dressing regularly. Everything seemed normal, if far more extreme than my previous bumblefoot experiences.

I think a clean syringe is a better, cleaner, and hopefully less painful, option than my “maybe I should just cut it open and see if that helps” thoughts. I had heard of “Prid” but not ichthammol

I'm not sure, Kris. I can see what looks like a red circle with a white centre & I think that's where I would apply the ointment but it also looks like it might have multiple cores ~ is that possible? At least it won't hurt.

Rainy and muggy today. Made for a nice sunset though.

If you could get him to ride in on your shoulder that might work. 😉

More than any of the rest of us it seems you have trouble getting stuff. Do you have a medical kit or list of things to have on hand? You need some inventory of medical supplies.

We Survived

All are safe. The storm under performed. We had some dry air sneak in around 9:00 pm that helped keep the levels down.

Everyone is hanging out in the coop because the evil snow blew its way into the run. I'll throw some straw down for them today. Big babies.

They keep being startled by song birds flying past the front window. It's funny and yet I feel bad for them being constantly startled. 😆

I would plead with the vet for help first. Can vet techs do any moonlighting? It's a very specific request, and aspiration or lancing (would an x-ray help locate things?) could buy time and preserve the rooster's foot while you wait for the antibiotics.

Can bumblefoot be like a person's root canal infection, and have chambers of trouble that sometimes don't clear out? So could an internal pocket of the bumblefoot infection never have completely healed, and now is acting up?

If the point of the ichthammol is to soften the skin and allow the internal pressure to stretch it enough to help bring it up and see where the main problem is located, then it might help. If it is a "hot" thing though like capsaicin - pepper - it will make it more painful for him, just like soaking does.
