Lucky is doing great, she’s eating like crazy, fitting in with the flock like she never left it, and her back feathers are starting to unmatt. Her bum is still bare from the massive trim, but the lice are all gone for now (dusting #2 is written down on my calendar!) I love that Carbaryl powder, now illegal here and potentially cancer causing or not

Today I did a full clean and bedding replacement in the chicken Trailer Coop (2.5 hrs) and hand carried a bale of hay to the far corner of the field in the top right of the above picture (which I tried to post yesterday) 7 square bales hand moved into the woods and the cows relocated from said far corner of the field they weren’t supposed to be in (3 hrs). That was on top of morning, afternoon, and evening chicken chores! Arduinna had fun, especially on the walk through the woods with the hay. At one point while I was cleaning the coop she went to play in the woods and didn’t come when I called. I thought I had lost her and was freaking out... she was just checking the leftover cow hay quietly though. If you will excuse my dishes (water issues means I let them collect too much) this is why goats make less than ideal house pets! It literally takes two seconds for things like this to happen...View attachment 2521161 View attachment 2521164
But she’s just so cute! Look at how much her little horns have grown :love

Love ur kid!

Saw something on lice/mites. Have to share the most easy and productive way I keep mites at bay. You know the lice/mite spray for canary's feet? In pet stores? Yep! A squirt on the back of the neck, on the chest, under the wings, on the bottom part of the back, and of course the bottom. I only do this..if..I see lice/mites. Works great, is safe, and inexpensive..oh, and easy to do.

Those eggs look delicious. The goat is certainly cute.

I'm very glad that Lucky is doing well. Chickens are tougher than we give them credit for being. Lucky is certainly a survivor.

Out of curiosity, what’s the active ingredients? I’ve had excellent success with pour on ivomec. (Remember I take in some really gnarly rescues, and I also only treat when needed) For instance, Roostie actually has a few lice. When I’m handling him to change his bandages I notice them, normally they preen out most lice, but he’s been under the weather and not taking as good care of himself as usual. If it gets out of hand I’ll treat him, either with the ivomec or the powder, but only if it starts to get bad.

The nice thing about the Carbaryl powder is it knocks the lice out dead, instantly. When I first rescued Puffy she was absolutely crawling with them; I washed her up, blew her dry, and powdered her liberally, then continued to blow dry (hopefully the carcinogenic factor is being vastly overstated...), she was on a whitish towel and within mere minutes the little red nasties were literally falling off her dead, and as a bonus, had stopped running up my arms (shudder).

For Severe scaly Leg mites, the ivomec pour on is my weapon of choice. In addition to the external treatment, soaking, debriding necrotic tissues and scaled on mite debris etc. It’s systemic, and gets the buggers you can’t physically reach under the scales when they feed. The soaking and gentle cleaning is still needed to remove the mite poop and dead mites, but if the legs are totally out of control the chemical treatment really gets you a jump start on winning the parasite battle, and takes out the lice and any other mites too.

Shameless chance to re-share two of my favorite rescue girl videos... it was a tough call between Croppy chasing grass hoppers and Tippie, but Croppy is in the video with Sammy and I can’t believe it’s been so long since I took in Tippie
