Officially recognized breeds in chickens is much like dogs and cats. Only I think chicken genes may be much harder to work with. I find it all quite odd. However, as a scientist, I love to classify things based upon observation. This falls right into that.

I also find it interesting how we do things like drop the Plymouth. Barred Plymouth Rock becomes Barred Rock. White Plymouth Rock becomes White Rock. I had no idea that the White Rocks we raised for meat birds were the same genetic line as Sydney. I never would have guessed that.
Does it emerge from the administration do you think? Shared terminology becoming buzzwords as administrative actions entrench into habits? Or is it something else?

My brain, honestly, it's only 8.45am! I'm not even fully caffeinated yet :gig

I think it's different again in science where the motive is the greater good.

I think as humans we shorten everything to make it easy. SHRA for example. Sometimes it leads to confusion.

I think understanding genetic lines is important. Should every chicken be pure breed and easily categorized, heavens no. Should we understand what we as humans have done to chickens, most definitely. We may need to undo something someday.

I find myself interested enough in the Dominique that they are now on my list of breeds to consider when I next add to the tribe.
