Maybe I can start a sub group that does not have a society based upon pain and intimidation. Fingers crossed.
I know Shad disagrees but my observations say temperment & breed are not separate & some breeds are just sweeter natured ~ as a generalisation. I think Polish are one of those breeds. Having said that, I just realised that among my birds the sweetest natured are also the poorest layers. 🤔 🤣 Now there's a conundrum! It could be a catch~22 or a bit of self fulfilling prophecy because I have always actively looked for breeds that are supposed to be sweet natured & my expectations are then that I will have few tribe dramas ~ & I have always had very few tribal upsets despite doing so much wrong!

I want too use the deep bedding method. It makes sense from what I have read.

Someone has mentioned getting me an oil drum but thinking a new bin would be better too make this charcoal.
You don’t need ash for dee bedding. You just need lots of bedding. That is what I do. Lots of leaves, some pine straw and a bit of wood shavings that I use I the nest boxes. It works great.
Some chickeneers use ash to help keep down mites. But that is more a dust bath additive or, in the case of that Bekissed thread, an actual treatment.

How well do the chicks know their escape route? And is there an escape route at the other end?

If they know where to run, maybe it's ok to let her in?
No, I will not be adding the other chickens for weeks. It will be just Phyllis and the littles for some time. I need to establish the Cluckle Hut as their coop before I grant access to anyone else.

Right now the only escape location is the best box. But for the next several days that the only time any large hen will be in with them is overnight and first thing in the morning. During those times they will likely be with the heat block.

I really like what I read in bee's thread. That's what I would like too attempt to achieve. I use activated charcoal here daily.

My dog was a little sickly earlier he had charcoal 2 hours ago and is now completely fine.

I know this charcoal with be different but through the winter I think it will be really helpful. 🤞
