A Day of Rememberance

November first is a tough day around Fluffy Butt Acres. It is the anniversary of perhaps the greatest failure of mine as a chicken guardian. It is the day that my chicken friend Elphie fell in the pool and passed from hypothermia while I ran inside to take a call for work.

I remember her every year on this day. She was the first of these chickens to take an interest in me. She was funny, smart, and beautiful. She taught Daisy, the greatest hen, ever the ropes.

For those who choose not to read the entire thread and don't know Elphie's story, here is a link to it.

And here is my friend who I tragically let down. I miss you all the time. I'm so sorry my friend. Please forgive me and rest in peace.

That's a BIG emotional challenge :hugs

I was asking if the pricking somehow made them easier to peel. I am confused as to whether it does or not now.
In my experience, it makes them easier to peel. Also, you don't have to check how old the egg is before boiling it.

Try pricking the flat end of an egg before boiling it and see what you think. Any fine sharp pin will do. I used a small safety pin before I was given the egg pricking tool.

I was waiting for you to chime in, Shad. I distinctly remember you saying you don’t view chickens as a food source.

I used to feed lots of eggs back to the chickens, but stopped when I learned my flock was fat. Now they are rare treat, or emergency food for a sick bird. We do eat the eggs, but not tons of them. When my son is in town, he eats quite a few. During peak laying season, I tend to give lots away.
Me too. Generally, I eat eggs for weekend breakfasts and they're usually scrambled. But every now and then I have a fried or boiled egg. I give away a half dozen whenever I can.
