Everything reliable I have read (like university extension courses) says not to touch it.
I don’t know any better so I am following that advice. Also of course none of mine love being touched (though Diana did have a bit of a sunbathe on the coffee table by my chair) so I try not to unless necessary.
I hope I am doing the right thing.
🙁
I should add that Dotty shows no such respect for my personal space. She just tried to take a chunk out of my calf!

I need some coaching or just some tips and tricks from @BY Bob or anyone who has a similar heated waterer to the one that he and I have.
It is something like the one in the picture below. The help I need is any tips to making filling it easier. Mine holds 4 gallons so not super heavy when full but still somewhat weighty.
I cracked my first one by dropping it on the floor when turning it over once full. So I got a replacement.
I have just come in from refilling that one in anticipation of some cold nights ahead. The first time I tried to turn it over the top rotated off and 4 gallons of water spilled everywhere. I admit I got a bit flustered.
I did manage it on the second try but it was a painful process that was not made any easier by the very loud and not particularly constructive suggestions provided by the princesses. Maggie and Dotty were particularly critical and came close to hurting my feelings.
Lesson one is exclude the ladies while I try and do this.
But there must be a trick to turning it over without getting sopping wet.
I am off to dry off and recover my equanimity!

You probably won't like this but have you considered getting a smaller one that is lighter/less cumbersome to flip?

Or a fill from the top one? (i.e. nipple waterer)

Agree on the not touching anywhere near it… it looks still blistered and swollen. I imagine it feels similar to a heat burn afterwards. Poor Dotty. But she will still look just fine once it heals.

I'm sure there are many reasons for this suggestion being unhelpful, but can it be filled and flipped above a sink and then carried into position in the coop and plugged in?
I am fine flipping it over open ground - but flipping a 4 gallon bucket is a bit of a palaver and there is nothing to hold on to so my hands slip (which is how I dropped and cracked the first one).
I am hoping this is the last refill I have to do for this season!
What would be wonderful is a design where you could seal off the outflows allowing you to fill it via rubber bung in the top and then somehow twist to open the openings.
I wonder if I should send the company that design idea!

So our little windstorm on top of all the other crazy weather lately did more than just remove one of my French doors, it also dropped a smaller cedar across the road near our trailer (DH and I took care of that yesterday on the way down to drop off my moms smokes) and did this to our Dogwood Tree. This was the second largest Dogwood in the Province of BC, and was debatably older than the largest as well.
