A treasure for your book collection! What a thoughtful gift!

That's an interesting coop design with the roosts above the nests. I can see what they're getting at but it doesn't look like it offers much ventilation at the very top roost, where I assume most of the chickens would go at night. In the right climate (not mine), it would be cosy up there. Where I live I doubt hens would survive if they roosted up there. It'd be far too hot.
There is a whole section on ventilation - the book is a big proponent of ventilation calling it the most important responsibility of a chicken keeper is to ensure proper ventilation 'nothing is more important to a chicken than pure air'!
I agree though it is not obvious from that picture - I imagine it will have a roof ridge vent and ventilation under the eaves. It is however not catering for your climate - seems to be Northern half of US - some examples and photos from Ohio and New England.
There is a lot more to explore in the book. As well as barns for each kind of farm animal, it also has sections on root cellars, smoke houses, and grain stores.
Lots for me to explore.
:love

Trying to have a good day, but a neighbor idiot thinks it’s funny to tease Jaffar through the fence. I was way across the yard and saw it. Jerk was gone by the time I got there, but poor little guy is upset. Why are some people so thoughtless? ($&!@$&&)! Makes me angry.
Most everybody in town, likes the little rooster, and usually stop and look at the chickens. But I haven’t seen this guy before. I would like to have a talk with him.✊

I just wanted to share an update for those who were interested. They passed the bill to eradicate the chickens. They changed the bill to say “population control” instead of “eradicate”. But at this point it’s the same thing 🤦🏽‍♀️ So disappointed in those who were in favor of this.
Oh no! That is very sad.
Will you be allowed to give any of them sanctuary in your yard?

Just got this Maryanne pic with the caption, "she's fitting in perfectly." Maryanne is the one front and center. Always the "people chicken", I'm sure she's the first in line for some snacks and attention. 🥰👍

This is great news. Seems she integrated very quickly!:love

A friend of mine gave me a wonderful gift. It is an old book - printed in 1881 in NY. It is called 'Barn Plans and Out-buildings'.
It is full of diagrams and building plans. There is a whole chapter on chicken houses. This is one of the more unusual designs.

And here is a design for providing heat during extremely cold nights using an underground stove.

I absolutely love books like these… sure some of the knowledge is dated, but some of it is just fascinating and so practical!
