Hmmm... @micstrachan , next thing you know, it will be 'all the above'..except maybe the production breeds.:lau:lau

amazing how our wish lists just get longer, lol. And each breed (and individual chicken within a breed, too) brings us some joy and something different to the mix💗💗💗
Haha! You got me! But, yes, they do bring so much joy.

I've been eyeing Russian orloffs, but at least this year, everyone is sold out. Definitely not time yet. eventually will need to rebuild the walls of the coop. maybe when that happens, we can expand it and make room for the others. geese are on my list too, but don't have things set up for them yet, even though the supply store is supposed to have them arriving any time now. it's tempting to get them anyway to raise with this batch, but not this year. at some point, raising them with the tribe would be nice.

Yesterday afternoon, they decided on personal spa treatments rather than the group rate

I'm going to have to refill those before I can plant anything....

Mugshot Monday early because I'm out here with them (they had some brussel sprouts for the first time, loved them) now and I can't count on myself to do it tomorrow! They had a short rest and preening party.
Butters, Popcorn in the back and Peanut on the right.

Hazel on the left, solo shot. She nabbed some oil from Butters gland when Butters' feathers were all up. More interested than anything I think, she was tasting it, and then looked down at her legs and seemed about to preen with it, but then didn't. She tends to appoint herself Chief Inspector in all things. She stays close by when I'm petting someone who has squatted, looking front to back, doing some pecks here and there, checking out the other's rear ends too. View attachment 3039816
That is one regal looking lady!

He was such a handsome boy. :( So sorry he had to go.:( I know it is better with teh girl now, but I do love the boys (in a different way than I love my girls. Most of my boys have never been cuddly...some of my girls have been...but they are smart, alert handsome & responsible!)
Yes he was pretty, and I could pick him up and hand feed him. But he was unpredictable... And too hard on my wee Silkies.

Yes! If you raise them with some chicks, they are much more likely to be protective of your chickens. Raised separately, not so much. I sooo want geese.....but still working on Hubby (he is petrified of them!)

He is so not a 'farmer'. Each time something like this happens, he learns a little. One would think that he would be able to transfer a lesson from one situation to another reasonably well, as he is fairly intelligent. But no, it just 'isn't on his radar'😔
He's a man, he needs to be taken under your wing, and gently smacked up the side of the head ☺️.

Life is all about learning, and the best leassons learnt are those from the school of hard knocks.

Apparently a single goose raised with chickens bonds to the flock and becomes an effective guardian. It is tempting but I am not sure what a goose needs to be happy. I have always rather liked geese.

Do you use those as planters, or are they for the chickens? I used to grow potatoes in a bunch of old tires but I stopped growing potatoes and vaguely wondered about repurposing the tires for the chickens.

A formal introduction: Bella
Bella for beautiful or maybe for belladonna. My black cat is called Nightshade; maybe they will become friends.
She has pink toes at the end of her black legs and white flashes under her black wings. When she is grown I believe she will be all black.
She likes to stretch out her toes and flap her wings, but hasn’t yet learned to take off.
She is an absolute pig and eats all the time.
She is not a Jersey Giant or a black Orpington. Nor is she a Sapphire Gem (had to look that one up). Unfortunately a clean-legged Marans requires a major road trip to visit @RebeccaBoyd (maybe next year).
Bella is a cross between an Ameraucana and a Marans which I believe makes her an Olive Egger. Well done @bgmathteach!
Of course, that is all just what I believe - we will learn more as she grows. Meanwhile, please welcome Bella to our collective global tribe.
