It wasn't magic, part of it was it turned out to be primarily airborne in transmission versus the more common flu and colds surface contact/hands/nose, wasn't it?
Or is it all, even way back before Covid, having to do with weighing the consequences of asking folks to wear masks?
Mask tax

I hate to say this but it was really the unavailability of masks. They did not want the public buying up masks when there were not enough for hospitals and Healthcare workers. It was a calculation to buy time to increase stockpiles before creating a run on them in the public arena.

I had told my “favorite uncle” that I had a headache one day. He said “all you need is a tourniquet around your neck and the headache will pass” yah, favorite uncle!
If I had a nickle for everytime my Dad said that........

If we're to believe the CDC, they said August of 2020 that the cloth masks don't help against wildfire smoke. That's what I'm stuck with as the commercially made masks use textiles I'm allergic to.
And chance of using a heavy construction type one, with the silicone type rubber and the screw in puck filters? Sure you’ll look a wee bit crazy, but that was the route I went when spraying paint and insulation removal (nasty fiberglass and mouse droppings 🤢) in our previous home renovations. It was with the price to not have to mess with those annoying fiber ones for things.

The lesson is that you need to have more shindigs and invite people from PA. That way you don't let these creatures move in like this.
Would you really drive all the way here for a shindig? If so, you are definitely on my invite list!!
Meanwhile, back to pest control.

Gaaah, wasps under the deck, that's tricky.

1. This is a ground-level deck, like right on the ground? No access at all? Otherwise, at dead of night, light it from above with a flashlight and squeeze a long rake under there and pull it off the underdecking, raking it toward you.

2. I don't know about Sevin powder but would be concerned for it moving once it rained, which way does drainage go?

3. Over the door, again after dark, spray it, wait until morning and bag it and take it down. Some people could be injured....a friend got stung on his lip as he was trying to eat a hamburger, that hurts! Otherwise he had no allergic reaction. Hmmm...that's a reminder to

4. Check that you're up to date on your homeowners :lau

5. Grill -- I'd hose out the grill, then scrub using dishsoap, rinse with the hose, drain, and THEN put it on high to get the rest. I'd be worried that merely having it on high will not necessarily get all of the smell gone. But it might be sufficient.

6. Check your gas supplies after (4) above and have a fresh tank ready to go.
I think mice and birds nests are dealt with. Smells fine.
Wasps above kitchen door are going into a space between the roof shingles and the rest of the roof structure. So no chance to take it down.
I tried spraying up in the crevices last night and I don’t think it has made any difference. I think I am going to don as much hazmat protection as I can create and after real dark go up a ladder and puff the dust under the shingles. Wish me luck.
The deck is really tricky. No access. It has a roof covering so wash off is not a huge issue. They are really aggressive those ones (the ones over the door seem to ignore me going in and out but the deck ones were really not happy with me being there). I can see a small gap where they come and go. I think I could puff dust into that crevice. Again, safer after dark.
At least Maggie benefited from the baby mice. About the size of my thumbnail.

Good luck with your wasps, and thanks for thinking of your guests. I’ve been on the “in-laws are allergic, wasps are my friends wagon for a while, but… DH is pretty reactive. I’m on day three post sting and still have a tennis ball sized hot red spot, though the swelling is going down and I’ve moved onto itchy… so it could be a serious safety concern. It’s my own fault for drinking so much pop and putting two tbsp of sugar in my coffee and for not realizing the little guy was on my arm before I sat down!

I have all this property, money, great toys, wonderful pets and some good friends. None of those assets stopped me from becoming sick. (The term “can’t take it with you “ seems to apply to me. And I’m so bored, I’m double tipping my Uber eats and shopping people. (And hiding away out back with the chooks) this is no way to live!🙁
