Drama at the Chicken Palace this morning.

I heard very loud, very angry chickens while I was getting up this morning.
I rushed out and I found that Babs had decided to jump down off the rafters into the servant's quarters rather than into the run as usual.
She could not get back. I don't know why she couldn't go back the way she came in, but apparently that was impossible.
I am sure you have spotted that this was all my fault.

So, I am apologizing profusely for my wrongdoing. I am not 100% sure in all honesty what I did wrong, but I realize there is no point in arguing so I am apologizing anyway.

Here is Bernie yelling at me through the door of the servant’s quarters. I will spare you the sound track.

Love her. And how dare you, 🤣

Well, well. The Chicken Palace is a happening place!

Eli has been in and out of the nest boxes all week but mainly as Babs’s bodyguard. I guess she decided to try it out for herself. She created a deep bowl in the bedding and laid this little number. It has white spots and is 46.6g = 1.6oz.
Congratulations Eli!
She seems quite surprised by what she produced.
Babs also laid today.
Bernie can’t see what all the fuss is about and thinks it is all a waste of time.
I have forgotten how I collect eggs and where I store them - I think I have a basket somewhere!

Woohoo! More first eggs! That's awesome! :wee :wee :wee

Oh dear. This little fella was right next to the house this morning. It looks like a bad case of mange.
The two older and much bigger foxes look like they are much healthier.
Does anyone know if the mites that cause mange in foxes are an issue for chickens? Cats?
I will research and call a friend of mine who is a retired vet but I thought someone here might just know!

That's awful. Poor thing. I hate to see any animal suffering like that.

Aww poor wee fella - cold is hard on chickens sometimes.

Yes her beard is awesome!

When Curly, Fluffy and Henny were all together broody they would keep stealing the golf balls that where in the nest, one day on would have them, then there would be a golf ball under Curly, and one under Henny.... then Fluffy would pitch a fit and steal Curly's.... it was hilarious! And then Dorothy would go and lay her egg in with them! until she went Broody herself hahaha.

I don't mind them being broody, as long as I haul them off the nest a couple times a day to eat, drink, poop I am ok with them.

Is it because she has trouble seeing with her topnot?

You don't have any snow - is that normal for this time of year?
It's melted. We're likely getting more over the next 8 weeks.

I'm thinking yes on the crest. She's seeing fairly well for her at the moment. Need to trim more, but giving her time to build some confidence too.

Good afternoon everyone.
I have some sad news to report today. Last night I lost little Athena to a monster Raccoon. It was after midnight and the chickens out of the blue started screaming their heads off. By the time I got my shoes on and out the back door I spotted it packing Athena's body towards the creek bank. Thankfully my dogs were right behind me and they tree'd the evil beast in the mimosa tree. He is no more and will never have another chicken dinner. To make it worse I woke up this morning to also find that overnight for no reason I can find the smallest of Chiquita's leghorn babies passed as well. I am at a complete loss with that one. I have to think there was something wrong with it because it was noticeably smaller then the others and the only one who had yet to manage to fly out or in the tote on it's own. I buried Athena and the leghorn together beside Daisy. The evil raccoon did not deserve to be buried, he is in a garbage bag to be picked up Monday morning. Poor Ducky is beside herself. Athena was her partner in crime and she has looked for her all day. In a day or two she will be alright. Perdita and Grackle have been trying to hang out with her and she will for a time. Then she splits off and goes back to searching for Athena.
Oh no, how sad. I'm so very sorry. At least justice was served.

:hugs :hugs

You need to be better at your job servant. Aurora is not impressed with your efforts.
