If it happens again tonight I will get a picture as proof, but Grackle slept up on Holly's roost with her and Twig. I was too busy last night watching Momma Hen encouraging her chicks to sleep in her favorite tree with her. The little roo made it up beside his mother and stayed for about 5 minutes. The other 3 did not make it or were not even attempting to try and kept calling for their mother. His siblings calls got the better of him and the roo flew down to join them. A few minutes later Momma flew down and took them to under the hay where they have been sleeping since that 2nd night they were brought off the hill. They are 6 weeks old now and last night was the first night she encouraged them up on the tree. This will now be a nightly routine until she has them all with her. After all the excitement with Momma and her crew I looked up and saw that there were 3 on Holly's roost and it took me a few minutes doing head counts to realize who it was up there with them. I hope Grackle continues to sleep there. It reminds me of when Drummie and Daisy were both still around. Drummie always slept between the 2 sisters and I miss that.

I just checked and Lucky is still alive. She moved off her heat pad and placed herself right under Flo’s arse. I moved the poop away and scooched Flo over. I offered baby bird formula. Lucky smacked her lips, but didn’t take any. At least the wind has calmed down and it hopefully will not dip below 36°F tonight.

It’s almost midnight, so I’m going to sleep. Nighties.

I have a chicken question. I have a 5 foot fence but theres dogs on the other side. The chooks can see them if they were out. I have no foxes just have to watch for hawks. Can the chickens get over the fence or will they?

Eli and Babs would in a heartbeat. They might choose not to because of the dogs. Bernie might find it harder but she does 4’ easily so she would give it a go.

Could they if a wing was clipped? I've considered letting mine out to free-range, but we have so many hawks in the area I'm afraid to.

Oh No!
Those of you that have been here a year know how devastated I was when a late freeze wiped out my magnolia tree blossoms last March. Here is what our February weather has been like at times this year.

It is about to snow a little today, not freeze mind you so that's good.

It is still FEBRUARY!!!!!

There is no way it does not freeze again. I'm going to lose them all again this year.

I know this would be a lot of work, but if it will get below freezing overnight (well, either really windy and 30, or colder), can you put paper lunch bags over some buds and then wrap/tie them on around the limb below? I KNOW you can't do the whole tree...but it you could do, say, a dozen buds....maybe you would still have a bit of color????

My Botany Tax:
I like my Welsummers. They aren't as heavy as BRs, but lay lovely speckled eggs. Picture of a pullet, then a hen. (the pullet is VERY friendly - she will let me pick her up with no fuss. Not a snuggler, though)

I have to make a excuse to visit my sister now. Around Thanksgiving she noticed a stray half grown kitten. She was tearing up trash so she nicknamed her trash kitty and set out to catch her. A week before Christmas she finally managed to be able to touch her and brought her inside. Took her to the vet the next day for her shots and health check as she already has our old cat Jynx. They also made a spay appointment for February 27th. Well, look what Reece's, formally known as Trash Kitty gifted her with last night.

I have not even met them yet and already I want that little grey and white one.
