Someone should start an auto-sexing colour for Silkies so that we can tell pullets when born. Isn't Barring female auto-sexing? that is how they are telling my Bielefelder pullets from the roos, and Legbars, etc... ?
Barred hen crossed with not barred roo will result in barred roos and not barred hens. Roos are ZZ and hens are ZW genetically and the barring sits with the Z gene. The barred roos from the cross will be Z (barred) Z (not barred). The hens will be Z (not barred) W. Offspring from the offspring will be mix: 50% barred, 50% not barred, and those will be split between roo/hen. To get to auto-sexing, you have to breed back to original parents (or other pure stock) and then do some criss-cross breeding (while knowing the genetic breakdown) for something like 7 generations to get to the auto-sexing which produces the different hen/roo markings (when kept within the breed) consistently. Gets more complicated than I'm able/want to get at this point, so haven't delved into the details of all the criss-cross stuff.

I blame Rosie for what I have been binge watching the last 2 days. She came home from school the other day and insisted we watch Toddlers and Tiara's. I resisted and she insisted I had to watch these crazy mothers and kids. So now we watch it and Rosie comments that if she behaved the way most of the kids do I would have knocked her into next week. No no knocking into next week, but several times I've told her "I would kill you if you tried that". I guess you can say it is good mother/daughter bonding time. Rosie calling the kids crazy while I think some of the mothers are psycho.

Yep which is why I love the Bielefelders - already created hahahahaha!!!

But I am wondering if someone has had the same idea as me with regards to silkies - they are so hard to sex (without doing a genetic test) until they crow or lay an egg....

And then of course there was that 'sort of' discussion way back in the Fall about sexing eggs (which I would love to be able to do).

I agree that the multiquote thing doesn't work well well (in order to cut back on number of posts) unless they are the same topic.

Thank you all! But I am not sure if it is something to be congratulated on since we are kinda being forced to do this as the city is coming after us a little 😡 (chickens are allowed but only 5)

We thought we have moved into our long-term home 2 years ago so we have a lot of crap to be put into storage. Really NOT looking forward to moving.

I don't think our style will be like @Kris5902 as we will have builders to build us a home. We really just want to make sure our chickens be left alone. Once moved there, we will have lots of chickens with roosters. We will eventually dig a pond and have ducks. We also want to get goats.

I am not going to start a new thread because I won't update it regularly. I will for sure post chickens pictures here as much as I can.

Thank you Kris for your generous offer. I will surely let you know should I have any question.
Already making good decisions!!! Hire builders. Builders are lovely. Subcontractors at the very least… Oh, if I could go back five or six years… the things I would tell myself. 😂

I loved the owl video, then went and found more from the same name, fantastic.owls, then went to a Facebook page that seemed to be connected- same name - that’s selling owls. Uh oh. Didn’t like the sound of that. I thought this was all from a rehab or sanctuary. @LozzyR do you know if these are or aren’t the same?

Anyway that got my antennae up because in New York USA most wild animals can’t be owned as pets, and the state wildlife agencies oversee rehab, sanctuary, zoo establishments. I found another web site with each US states’ owl laws on pet ownership. This Facebook page -that may or may not be connected to the particular broody owl Instagram video we’re talking about (several videos looked like they were filmed in the same location - and maybe they were by the same entity as the broody owl video) was listing San Diego California USA as the business location, and the phone number was a Colorado USA area code, and the email was a personal gmail account. The business started the FB page in the Fall of 2022. Anyway both states do not allow owls as pets.

Kind of wish I hadn’t investigated. :(
Hey CB! :frow The broody owl post came from somewhere else and fantastic owls seems to be a collection of owl posts. It credits the lady whose post it is but when I went to her page, I couldn’t see it (she has a lot of posts though). I follow another page about a girl owl called Michael and the lady says she’s a conservationist and is licenced to work with birds of prey. She said in one post “to all those people who say they wish they had an owl as a pet, no you don’t.”
