Skies a fire! Last night had some epic shotsView attachment 3920973

Moon rise was hiddenView attachment 3920974And there she is.
Wow those are splendid! Beautiful! The sky here has been wonderful too, high atmosphere smoke making for some wonderful golden red sunsets.

Which I can’t enjoy due to the bazzillion mosquitoes!

I am laugh at my time thieves this morning chasing down mosquitoes and moths. Rosario has settled in, for now. He is still destined for the roaster though. Meanwhile he is living the good life - he never knew what tasty morsels moths and bugs were before being here!

He has been hanging around the oldest chicks as they are likely the same bin they all came from.
image.jpg

I see you also have those rather grim huge garbage bins, sheesh imagine if you will my 4’8” mother dragging those from the house to the road when one has a foot of snow on the ground?!

Everyone around here was so mad when they made us use those bins. And everyone just keeps them at the roadside it looks oh so unattractive.

And don’t get me started on raccoons and bears getting into them 😡

Happy Caturday everyone

We've convinced my Nana to quit taking the trash out. She knows I'll do it know. (I quite enjoy going out to breathe fresh air while putting a stinky can on the curb.)

Look at those legs. If he grows into those, he’ll be a big roo.View attachment 3920850
The biggest roo we ever saw at the feed store had a golden reddish sheen, weighed 13 lbs & his head came to my waist ~ & when he flapped his wings he looked like a golden vulture! What hen is big enough to mate w/that?

The most gorgeous roo !!! It was in the olden days before cell cameras so no photo!

Hahaha I have a cat like that - oh and just try getting Tippy out of my offfice/feedroom - she laid an egg in there one day!
Last month DH had locked the coop nests from the broodies but one of the new Silkie pullets decided she had an egg to lay & found sitting under a stack of stored tomato cages was a good nest!

This is not the hen that layed the egg but apparently Silkies are fascinated w/ round tomato cages.

Tassels
She is a tough one.
She has been in broody jail for just over three days. I suspected it wasn’t working because of how she was sitting all the time, determined to hatch a little 2x4.
But I let her out this morning anyway.
She ran around shouting, shared breakfast of tomato bits, slightly moldy blackberries and melon guts, and had a short dust bath.
She then dropped an elephant-sized heap of foul smelling dung (I have had to retreat to the safety of the garage as the smell was making my eyes water), and went straight to the nest box.
I guess she doesn’t care that much about the 2x4 she was determined to hatch previously and has so callously abandoned in jail!
I haven’t rigged up the hanging broody jail yet (I need supplies for that - many of which I have but need to dig out of boxes in the garage), so I think when I put her back in I will use a little portable fan to put a breeze up her butt.
Here she is checking out the spy cam just before jumping up into her favorite box.

Wow she sure is determined!

My heart is breaking 😢

This morning I heard a new crowing in the barn. Clyde. It was expected, but still was disheartening.

But the heart breaker was my witnessing him and Georgie going at tooth and nail outside. And they just wouldn’t stop! They both meant business.

I dragged the all inside as it was pelting down rain (another heart break more rain), put the silkies and youngest chicks in their pen. And again they went back at it. This time Clyde got poor Georgie down and wouldn’t let him up.

So Clyde is in with the chicks and Georgie out with the rest of the gang.

I will never hatch eggs again. It’s too heart breaking.

Now I have 5 cockerels to get rid of. What sort of crazy chicken math is this?

BEN was 14 lbs and stood high up to my chest when his neck was extended. I really loved that guy.
I loved all the roosters I had raised. Sir Jaffar was an indoor Roo, and was older when I got him, he was incredible. :love I miss him so much I tear up when I think of him. :(
