I think the step ladder is a great idea with 1 caveat. The angle. If you can remove the side braces and spread it to closer to a 45⁰ angle going up, I think it would work really well. At the current >60⁰ ascent, I think it's a might steep for how close together the rungs are, especially with the sides. Optionally, remove the metal hinge thing at the top also and gain 2 ladders, run 1 from the ground up the wall and the other crosswise above it with the end on the 6x6 and the other end supported by some sort of shortish post (or caught by the chains). The criss-cross gives some of the tree type variety/height while gaining more roots in the same area.

The wooden ladder (15') looks like the rungs are close to perfectly spaced out, and with that length, could make for quite the range of avoiding options, especially if it were angled so the upper end was no more than 6 feet up (or hang in from the chains as a swing)
The big straight ladder is a bit long to be anything other than right up to the rafters I think.
I will go out to morrow and do some measuring and trigonometry!
I am thinking the 2x4 boards across the step ladder could solve the angle point because they could alternate sides in the steps so the chickens could hop from one up to the other.
I can see it in my head but can’t explain.
Basically the 2x4s become the perches - the steps of the step ladder just supports them.

Not sure about cutting up a beautiful wood straight ladder in good shape, thats a valuable item! Have you seen the price of ladders lately?

I favor the step ladder - we have a wooden one and an aluminum one. Guess which one gets used? The wooden one is insanely heavy. Note, wood ladders are safer in any electrical situation, lightning, wiring.

Anyhow, you can also place 2x4’s on their flat side across a side of a step on to the round rail, both sides sticking out! They are even with each other?

I can attest that chickens like ladders. This was yesterday. They were elsewhere and then moved to this spot, plus one on the steps below me! I had to move the gang because I was using small screws, plus I didn’t want anything falling on them!

Based upon this, the sharp angle of the ladders will be NO problem. Glad your supervisors are keeping close watch.

LOVE the speed bump idea. They use them as pedestrian lines in Europe so I'm told. Steering wheels make speed idiots out of some drivers!

Not sure what language this is but the face meets my mood re: Calif drivers!

Two for…

Checked in on the polish chickies while at work, and noted I didn’t latch the crate door properly, looks like someone was roosting along the edge of the door and pooped on my feed bin. Ewww! Glad I put the camera in the crate!

My mum closed the door, safer that way in case Leah tried to get out, Petra is well enough to go exploring but Leah isn’t.

Tonight Leah is still hanging in. But I am extremely worried about her.

Nesting Time

A silly distraction. Oh what those chickens can put you through.

I forgot how early the sun sets now and Niamh was not in the coop and about an hour after dark, I realized it.

So out I went expecting to find her on top of the coop extension. Alas she was not there.

I started looking for her and did not quickly see her. Then I noticed Éowyn trying to get up into what remains of the grape vines.

What is up there girl?

Why it's Niamh!

Even more astounding, she roosted in an old birds nest!
