I much fear Maggie (the original Suzi) is a boy. She and Suzi the 2nd are my most friendly and inquisitive Seramas. They are two weeks old.

That little comb just popped outta nowhere today!!!

What a little cutie!

I am not familiar enough with the tiny seramas to even guess genders.

We do have several AWOL squatchers lately.......

I don't have Seremas, but any time a chick younger than a month gets a comb like that..... its a boy.

Hi squatchers!
Update on my first broody! She is now very very broody. Sitting on a small clutch of infertile eggs with great focus and determination! :yesss: I am picking up my hatching eggs next Friday. :woot(I am waiting until then because I have a trip coming up and so I needed to push the hatch date a bit later).

To my experienced hatcher friends: question about housing. Bubbles made her nest in the hospital coop. When no-one is sick they all have access to it but now that she is in there I have closed the gate that connects the hospital run to the main run. So no one can bother her. BUT hubby is very worried about how high off the ground that little coop is. And I have no idea if it is a problem. Hospital coop looks like this (but modified so the run is bigger and there is more light and ventilation). I will have food and water for the babies inside the little house part, but hubby is worried about the ramp. Should we keep the door closed for a day or two after they hatch? Modify the ramp so it is less steep? Add bumper rails? Stop worrying because everything is fine and we are over thinking this? :barnie

I have seen a few assertive females combs pop up quickly too, and then just stop.
@pitbullmomma does he strut around all cocky like? Usually the most assertive male will show himself very early on. I don't know why it always has to be our favorites!

I have put some of mine in my coop like that on purpose! Yes, just close the upper door for several days, until the chicks are moving about well. Leave it open for momma until the first chick hatches. :fl

I would keep her shut in the coop with the chicks for at least 3 days after they hatch (or until she gets restless) longer if the weather is wet/cold. The ramp can be tricky, you'll want too keep an eye on them when you let them out because Mama can go up the ramp and call for the chick but the chick can't figure out how to follow and die of cold. You need to make sure all the chicks know how to get up and down the ramp before you stop watching. I would let them out on the 3rd evening 1-2 hours before dark and watch to make sure no babies get separated from mama.
