Yes, it's called a Block Heater. It keeps the engine block warm enough to start the car. Cars here used to be equipped with one as a standard feature. They have, for some odd reason, stopped doing that now. If you want one (and you do!) you must purchase it as an option.

And yes, breathing is extremely difficult when it's this cold, even for those that don't suffer from asthma. If you're asthmatic, don't even poke your nose outside. There are times I have several layers of scarves over my face to keep the skin from freezing off and to keep my breath semi-warm enough that I can walk across the driveway to the house and not require resuscitation.
I had frost-bite at the tip of my nose and on the top of my ear-lobes.
Despite the fact that i was wearing a ski-mask, a scalp-cap and a jacket with a warm hood. Just a couple of seconds of exposure are enough…

Frosty nights are forecasted for next week, so hopefully that dam pond freezes over.
Its not only that they're not safe up there, but they're not paying their foo-bill!
Just three eggs in December out of over 30 ducks. :barnie
Watching that video, they obviously come over when it's treat time. Soooooo, set up a net behind the food area and then lift it when they get to the food, before they can waddle on back to the pond! Then coral them into the duck house, slam the door shut behind them, and laugh.

Since i live here, i have always proposed to build a tall wall in the North border to bottle up the arctic air in the eternal darkness, but i nobody is listening to me...
So basically "Trump meets Game of thrones"... :)

Yes, most of the country is covered in the north by the east-west barrier of the Alps. However, we're in the NE corner which is outside of this coverage, also farthest from the Adriatic sea (let's say about 250 miles as the mallard flies), has the most continental climate, representing the western edge of the Pannonian basin.

Sometimes all this is demonstrated in a small way - recently most of the country has been having 50+ F temps, even the alpine parts, while we stayed close to freezing most of the day. While that's not cool (it is, but not in that way), the nasty part is when we get hit by Buran, the wind out of Siberia which can bring instant swings to below-zero F. Doesn't happen all that often but it's always a possible threat to young trees etc.

I'm going to add "able to drown a duck" to my resume... these guys don't like me, because I am forever chasing them out of the chicks, dogs and horses waters. But tonight, I opened the gate and this young lady was screaming bloody murder. Couldn't see her anywhere, drakes were off without a care. She was stuck in the duck pond. So she finally worked out how to get in, but not out. Lucky it is warm her so I don't have to worry too much about her getting a chill, buthave made a stepout of the pond for future drownings.

Poor thing looks like she got sucked into the mud.

She does! I do wonder if the different soil made her struggle so much. Have had younger ducks use that at the old place and were fine. The soil here is a very powdery rich red soil, and when wet can be very sticky. The ducks had been billing around the bottom of the pond for ages and cleaning heads in the water making it very dirty
