Really good instructions on treating a nasty wound, but totally applicable to most minor ones. The bonus here is an extremely basic first-aid kit list. Well done!

Lots of good info here, including some good references to other info sources. A good article for anyone thinking about keeping a roo.
We've all been there at some point ... learning lessons the hard way. Thank you for documenting some of yours. There are lots of really good pictures, but beyond a lesson in Chicken Math, not much text. Some of the pics are intriguing ...(WOW, That's a big snake!) ... so some text on how you dealt with predator prevention would be very helpful. I'll be hopefully watching for some updates, as this has the potential to be a VERY good article! Thanks!

Thank you for the suggestion! I’ve added some pictures of my chickens!
OhMaGosh! I've wanted guineas forever, and this article just made it worse for me, 'cause I can't! I'm very lucky that my neighbors are rooster-tolerant. I don't think I can stretch them far enough to accept these not-so-little noisemakers, as well. But a gal can dream. In the meantime, I can just keep playing the wonderful call-videos in this article!
Still don't know if I could do it, but it seems straightforward, quick and easy to do.

I put this up for folks who are squeamish, but realize they may need to take care of a chick someday.

Whether or not you agree on the Top Ten has no bearing on this article's rating. The pics are so beautiful that they rocket this article directly to "Excellent!"

This looks really nice! I especially like the idea of the removable wall on guide pins. It sure makes it easier for one person to move things around! The detail pics are great. If you could, please add a few overall pictures so we can see how the pieces fit into the "big picture." Adding a plug for the book would be nice, too. It sounds like a good resource.
All in all, very nicely done! Thanks for sharing!

I mentioned the book by author. I went ahead and added the title and publisher. Thanks for your comment. What did you think about the latches? I've heard racoons are smart, but I didn't think they could open the spring loaded hook.

Love this coop!

That looks pretty sturdy. What company made your kit? And Javelina? You really DID have lots of predators!

I bought the kit from CCOnly, and the actual coop was great (although it's a soft wood, I oiled the exterior once every couple of years and it held up well)! The run was too small once I added to the flock, and the Javalina literally smashed it opened to get to the feed inside the run which took a LOT of force to do, so I replaced it with a MUCH larger metal dog kennel I bought at Tractor Supply. It was a great starter coop though, and looked nice in the yard.

This is a great start! The wire basket is such a good idea for a Mama Heating Pad (or cave.) Using a cutaway bin to contain water mess is pure genius! My next brooder box will definitely be using your basket ideas. Very nicely done!

Thank you very much for the kudos! - Let's see what the ducklings think about it. ;-)

Great starter and expansion set-up. Clearly explained & shown in a series of excellent pictures. A fine example of Chicken Math 101 and "Putting the Chickens Before the Coop." We've all been there, but most of us didn't handle it this well! Nicely Done!

Very well thought out! There's a lot of good information here, presented in a clear, easy-to-follow manner. It's a good read for anyone contemplating a few cockerels in the flock or dealing with a feathered "problem child." The recommendation to read Temple Grandin's work is a good one, too. If you don't have time to work through the books, look for the speeches and video shorts on YouTube. They're pretty much all good!

The pictures are excellent, but the commentary is even better! This is a wonderful example of a work-in-progress where we learn as our charges grow ... and we have to adapt to meet their needs. Well done ... but keep us posted as they grow, you learn ... and we benefit, too ... Please?

This is a good article. It makes fermented feed sound much easier than I'd thought. When the weather breaks again (I HATE winter ice!) I'll be giving it a try. Can you please put in some pics, so readers can see what the stuff is supposed to look like before, during or after fermentation?
