Thanks, everyone. Lucky is still with us (barely). There is a storm coming, so I just spent the last hour putting the tarps back up so it’s not so windy in the run. Despite these efforts, sometimes the wind will flap the overhead tarp and they’llneun into the coop. I put Lucky in the coop to get her out of the wind, and she has friends around her. Honestly, I don’t think she’ll move from that spot on the floor unless I move her. I think what I’ll do, is after all the others go to bed, I’ll move her up onto a shelf with a heater where she can’t get pooped on. That way she’ll be closer to her friends instead of on the floor by herself. I doubt she’ll make it through the night.

I actually got to snuggle Cheetah today. Came home in blizzard. Snowing powder, visibility 1/2 mile plus or minus a bit. Was 38F when I left for work, down to 14 when I got home and wind blowing sideways. Everyone in coop except Cuckoo and Cheetah. Cuckoo let me give her a ride in. Blanche followed me back out to dinner Cheetah, so I started herding the both...carefully. She decided to head back in, but Lark came out and headed off exploring. Cheetah wasn't herding too well, but I managed to corner him trying to go through the fence to the garden. He started to squawk, then settled when he realized all I was doing was holding him close. We went into the coop to wait for everyone else to settle back down and Lark to come in. He snuggled in, even tucking his beak in to me and took a brief nap in my arms. I finally gave up on Lark coming on her own, tucked Cheetah up (he got a bit disgruntled), and went to herd her. She herded in, door closed, head count, all present and tucked in. Snow falling, wind blowing, hearty soup for dinner and tomorrow off.
Proof that our roosters love us! :love

Does anyone on here have some experience with seramas? I am considering getting some but I want to make sure they are a good choice for my flock. I have some bantam silkies and also some friendly larger breeds too. I live in San Diego so I don’t think the cold would be much of a problem for them other than on colder winter nights where I could probably just bring them inside. If any problems arise with the smaller and larger chickens my coop is split in half with a door, and I could keep the bantys on one side and the larger ones on the other side (both sides are large enough for plenty of chickens and each have nesting boxes too). Are Seramas hard to sex at a young age? I’m don’t want anymore roosters, so maybe if I got them when they were adults? Any feedback is appreciated! :)

If I haven’t mentioned it lately, he is! He really is, such a good rooster! Out there digging and scratching with his ladies, but taking time out to come over and see me! He doesn’t mind being picked up anymore, because he’s so used to it!
He really is a great emotional support rooster! :old :love
Aww, I just love roosters. The rules where I live don’t allow me to have roosters… but I have 2 anyway! Shhh… 🤫

Aww, i’m so sorry about Lucky. You’re a great chicken mama making this as comfortable as can be, glad she has some friends near her ❤️

Hi folks. Popping in. Sad to say Lucky is in her final days, if not hours. I could probably tube feed to keep her going a bit longer, but that would be cruel and prolong suffering.

It seems the other chickens know. Here she is with Little Mill sitting vigil before I left today.

Oh I am so very sorry Michelle. Such a lovely lady. And from observation of mine, I would say the others definitely know.

When they are old enough to use beakbook the Marshmallows may be interested in enrolling. They may not need it as Chiquita is doing her best to teach them to the best of her ability. They also watch the other chickens including Momma hen who had her crew on the hill yesterday branch hopping and climbing trees. I told them if by 3 months they are not tree hopping themselves, I will give them permission to enroll.
They would be very welcome to enroll and I am sure will pass the course with flying colors (ha ha!).

You’re a wonderful chicken mama, you care for your girls deeply. I thinks it’s a good plan to put her with her friends ❤️
