I feel it’s a dominance thing, mine are very food motivated - not that I give lots of treats but they will follow me, peck at me and if I don’t give treats will eventually wander off.My girls peck my back... I think Esme does it the most often. I wonder if it's because when I used to let them up on my shoulders they would jump up from behind me...
When I'm sitting or crouched hanging out with them, Esme will peck at my middle back (fairly hard, too) until I turn and look at her (I always say something like "whatcha need, pumpkin seed?" or "what can I do for you, tennis shoe?"), and she'll just stand there staring at me, neck extended, sometimes even standing on her tippy toes.
I need to pay more attention to what's happening around me when she does this. Maybe then I can figure out why she does it. Just for attention? Is she mad because I don't let her on my shoulders anymore? Is it dominant behavior? I love studying animal behavior, it's so fun!
Been keeping your family on my prayer listHi everyone.
I've been MIA since pretty much Friday evening. Rosie finally turned a corner Friday night into Saturday morning and is recovered from covid. This time around it was rough on her and a couple times I questioned if a trip to the ER was going to be necessary over her breathing. I am exhausted and have absolutely zero energy. I have no reason for this as I am not sick. I honestly believe I have set up a infection or abscess in the broken tooth. I am counting down the days until Monday when I can finally get into the dentist. I am making sure I spend some time outside with the chickens. The coop needs cleaning again and new plastic to cover it for winter. I want to get that done this weekend. The way I felt the last few days if it does not change it will not happen. This afternoon I hope to have some new pictures of the chicks, mainly individual ones of the silkies. For the life of me I still cannot tell one way or another if they are boys or girls. I still have not heard 1 attempt of a crow and zero tidbitting. If they are boys they also still have absolutely no interest in any of the girls be it their sisters or older hens either. This includes George. I look at their tails on some of them, maybe it is a boy. That same chick also has a perfectly round head poof with zero hints of streamers. They are 4 months and 1 week old today. You would think I could at least be able to attempt to start guessing one way or another.
TY for the video! Is Princess's sanctuary far? Wonderful that you can get updates. It makes the rehoming easier.Thank you all for your understanding
I will have to wait for both a lift and one of their open days, these people are extremely busy every day.
The above video is recording the experiences a lovely couple had on Dean's Farm 6 years ago.
Mary, the founder is speaking at the beginning.
In this clip you will see 12 rescued battery hens, in very poor shape as they have just arrived a couple of donkeys, one can't get enough love, horses pig'sthey loved a lot of attention. Sheep and ducks.
This second clip is very short but beautiful![]()
Hi! No fears Tomte ~ true that intent sometimes doesn't come across written pages. I left other threads for the same reason. People can get so excited to help about a topic they have experience in that it might sound know-it-allish but really they help a lot.I'm gonna vent here a little, but under a spoiler since it doesn't have anything to do with chickens. Feel free to skip over, I just need to let it out.
Sometimes being autistic is really, really hard.
I seem to be misunderstood constantly. When I get interested in a topic and want to explore deeper, look at it from as many angles as possible, and ask a lot of "but what if"s, because I'm curious and love learning, people tend to think I'm being a know-it-all, or preoccupied with "being right", when that's not the case.
Especially online, because tone and intent is hard to read over text. Misunderstandings happen a lot online for that reason. But I wish people wouldn't be so quick to jump to the defensive and even sometimes offensive.
When it comes to scientific topics, you're supposed to ask a lot of questions, aren't you? You're supposed to play devil's advocate, both with yourself and others, aren't you? I mean... That's literally how science works. We don't learn anything new if we don't challenge what we think we already know, and listen to opposing viewpoints.
This community has been overall nice and welcoming. But there seem to be some users (I've noticed that a lot of times they're people who have been here for years) who talk down to others. It just happened to me yesterday and it's been making me feel off, so. Yeah, I had to vent. I don't usually let this stuff get to me but occasionally it really busts through my armor.
Maybe I need PFM just so I can put "Autistic, please be patient" as my bio or whatever it isYou know, the thingy under the username.
SOOO anyways. Chickie tax for that

Talk about Thirsty Thursday! I just filled that thing a few hours ago!
Good morning
I have updates on princess.
Seeing her outside alone and knowing the weather is drawing closer to winter, I made the decision she needed much more. So as I said when her friend Tina died last November, it's best that I rehome her.
Looking for a new home was difficult and I couldn't be sure that they would protect her as I have done for so long.
Thankfully I found a sanctuary, one that is vegan and wouldn't even eat or sell their eggs. They give them their own eggs back
Yesterday was my hardest time, what with my dear old dog dying on Saturday then seeing princess leaving on Tuesday my emotional state was pretty low and I was also in unbearable pain, so much so I had to cancel an important appointment.
But the happiest news for me was seeing princess's pictures and receiving updates since she arrived.
Firstly they said that she was chatting a heck of a lot, to a turkey next to her and the flock she could see outside that inturn came back to talk to her.
Then even more comforting news last night. Yesterday princess made 3 new friends. Now that really made my heart glow.
Here are the first pictures I've received

That poor turkey has to listen to everything princess has to say

From the information I'm receiving Princess is really excited to be there. This is one decision I've made that was right.
Seriously, I love this thread and I'm glad I found itHi! No fears Tomte ~ true that intent sometimes doesn't come across written pages. I left other threads for the same reason. You're doing great & following By Bob's thread rules keeps us all in line lol ! This has been the sweetest niche IMO ~ talking about & posting pics of our chicks.

We had 5 recycled dog houses for the chickens to use, way too many, so we gave this one to a neighbor for their little dog.

If it doesn't have dirt it's boring.Happy Thirsty Thursday everyone.
Everyone is waiting patiently for Piglet to finish her drink. She is not sure which side of the waterer is tastier.
