A Christmas Surprise

Since the passing of Daisy, the greatest hen ever, we have never had a December egg. I caught Sansa in an egg box yesterday but I thought nothing of it as they have been using the coop a lot. I was checking out the coop today when I caught this out of the corner of my eye.

Well I have just screwed up fairly big. I was checking the roosting box of the Hospital tractor (overdue for cleaning) this morning and thought I would leave the big door open to air it out some. I am out of bedding, and I forgot left the door open. It has been raining. Now it is wet inside and needs mucked our and I don’t have anything to replace the shavings with except hay. Thistle and rose bush contaminated hay.

Could you tear up newspaper? It is surprisingly absorbent.

O, that is unfortunate. Can they survive temporarily on the hay?

It will be less than ideal, but I think it will have to do. I was putting it in the nestboxes and picking the thistles out... I’m just going to have to do a lot more of it. They are nasty stabby little needles.
