And what’s up with this? I mean really? What’s up with this! Two girls laying eggs in the coop and both tried to bite me, when I wanted to see what they were laying on! They never try to bite me, when I have them:
1. Sitting in my lap
2. Giving them treats with the rest of the hens.
3. Petting them as they sit beside me
I just don’t understand, they hate me !:th
Are they broody? Really all bets are off with broodies. No matter how sweet they are normally, their hormones make them crazy!:barnie
I know this from personal experience 🤣

As much as I loved and miss him, I know he was not perfect and had his faults. It is also a shame that I lost him at 18 months old. He was just now really coming into his prime and I could get a clear picture of what I was working with. As far as the marans standard goes he had a slightly high tail set, a halo around his neck and a few parasitic white feathers popping up in his toe feathering. His best attributes was he was wide, heavy and had a temperament to die for. Frankly for me, I value temperament above all else, who wants a perfect rooster if he is a devil to live with. I'm now standing back and nitpicking traits on his sons. So far Basil has a better tail set then his father, but, the tip of one tail feather is white. It is a older feather and he should loose it in the next juvenile molt so we'll see if it grows back. Basil is going to be big, but, I think he wont be as broad as drummie. He does so far have his father's temperament and being the new top rooster at 5 months he's not let his teenage brain get the best of him thank goodness. Bubba on the other hand, why was I not paying attention to this young boy before now. At 11 weeks he's built like a tank. Wide, thick legs and a broad back already, he may very well end up being stockier then his daddy. His tail set is good although a tad bit long. Over the next couple weeks his coloring will start to come in so I'll have to be on the lookout for the white. Bubba is sweet now, but he's not a teenager yet and he wont have Drumstick to learn from so I'll have to watch him super close to correct any unwanted behaviors if they pop up. If I'm fortunate though, I hope by this time next year to have 2 very handsome gentlemen strutting around.
I dunno - as I can't reliably tell one breed from another your concerns don't really get to me - I think having a lovely temperament and being easy on the eye is all I would be asking for!

Jaffar is built like a tank too! A little bit smaller one, but a tank nonetheless!:loveView attachment 2808769
Jaffar is a stunning little tank. I really enjoy hearing the stories about him and hope they continue for a long time. Secretly in time I want to add a cochin pullet to my flock as well. I have a thing for feathered feet and one would be right at home here. It's also really a shame it took me loosing Drummie to take a close look at what I have in Bubba. I've went back and looked at pictures of Drummie at a similar age and wow, he is thicker then his daddy was at the same time. I can say now I'd be a fool to let this boy go, and until this past week he was for sale and not even on my radar.

These are concerns from if I want to become a serious marans producer. Just little nitpicky stuff that I've been made aware of. I agree though for me temperament is key and so is eye candy. But honestly, there are some boys out there who Drumstick paled in comparison to and one day I would love to have one that looks like them. To do so though I'd be paying a arm and a leg for those eggs or chicks. But one day I might be able to make that happen.

This was Drummie at 13 weeks old to compare to 11 1/2 week old Bubba. Bubba is definitely going to have to go under lock and key. He really is a little tank.
